The Donkey Shed is nestled away in the breathtakingly beautiful Wye Valley and is the perfect escape from busy city life. Once an old donkey stable, the property has been transformed into a stunning holiday home that perfectly complements its idyllic surroundings. The fabulous hosts will be around to meet and greet on arrival, answer any questions you may have and give recommendations about the area - after that the place is all yours.
Guests enter into an open plan living space with a kitchen, dining and seating area, all sharing a spectacular view across the valley and along the river. On chilly days the room can be kept warm and cosy by a wood burner, with plenty of logs provided for your stay.
The kitchen is well equipped with modern appliances including an oven, induction hob, fridge and dishwasher, as well as all the basics needed to prepare a feast. When dinner is served, guests can eat at the dining table or alfresco out on the patio. The seating area has a comfy sofa and chairs, a TV and DVD player with a selection of films, meaning you can enjoy a movie night with your loved ones or simply sit socialising long into the night.
Upstairs on the mezzanine is a luxurious king size bed and downstairs is a snug room with bunk beds, ideal for children. Across the hall is the bathroom, which has a separate shower, a lavish marble bathtub and underfloor heating to warm cold feet. Locally made organic soap and bath bombs are also provided for you to use throughout your stay.
Outside the shed is a delightful patio and garden and both have seating and great views of the valley. The suntrap patio is a lovely spot for a barbecue, or you could venture down towards the river for a picnic amongst the wildflowers.
Guests are treated to a couple of complimentary bottles of delicious ale from a local brewery, and if it’s a special occasion a luxury welcome hamper can be arranged. For the ultimate relaxing break, a masseuse can be booked to come to the Donkey Shed.
The wonderful surrounding countryside is waiting to be explored, with fantastic footpaths and cycle trails right on your doorstep. Arguably the best way to discover the area though is from the river itself, with canoes, kayaks and paddleboards available to rent. There are even opportunities for wild swimming if you’re feeling brave! If that’s not enough, the Brecon Beacons National Park is around a half hour drive away and is a mecca for hiking and outdoor activities. You're also near to the superb Forest of Dean, which offers a number of fantastic walks through some absolutely charming scenery.
There is a good selection of lovely local pubs nearby, serving up local ales and wholesome meals. If you fancy yourself a bit of a foodie, you can enjoy a true culinary experience at one of two Michelin-starred restaurants, The Whitebrook and The Walnut Tree, both within easy reach. The historic market town of Monmouth is a 15-minute drive away, renowned for its quaint buildings, old castles, charming cafes and independent shops. And finally, a trip to Wye Valley wouldn’t be complete without visiting the romantic ruins of Tintern Abbey.

Leave a reviewWe had a wonderful week in the most beautiful location. The Donkey Shed is a remarkable place to stay - surrounded by beautiful scenery and a wealth of places to visit. Catherine & Hugh have created a truly wonderful place to stay with all the home comforts and a great deal of thought has ensured that it is also very well equipped. It is warm and cosy and in fact it is incredibly difficult to get sufficiently motivated to go out rather than just sit and enjoy the surroundings! We can also recommend the optional welcome pack which contains many local goodies including superb honey from Catherine and her daughter's bees! It was so lovely to wake up in the morning and look out over the valley without even getting out of bed! The furnishing was really tasteful and the bed was so comfortable too! All in all the Donkey Shed is the perfect 'away from it all' place to stay and we loved it so much that we are going to be returning in the late Spring next year.

We loved our stay at the Donkey Shed. Quiet location with amazing views from the living area. We would sit and watch the wildlife particularly the deer in evening. It was great to be able to go on walks from the lovely accommodation down to the river Wye. Plenty of places to explore.

One week at the Donkey Shed isn't enough! There is *a lot* of to explore in the vicinity, but first you have to overcome the desire to remain at the accommodation, and just drink in the view. It was generally deliciously quiet and comfortable. The sight and sounds of the wildlife all around (truly) were greatly enjoyed, even including those at night! ; ) And Catherine (and family) were on-hand, very ready and willing to help with any queries we had.
