Perched on the cliffs of Cornwall’s North coast between Crackington Haven and Widemouth Bay, Cancleave is a fantastic base for exploring this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The views out to sea and as far as Lundy Island are breathtaking and you’ll be able to enjoy them from the house or the South West Coastal Path, accessible directly from the garden gate. The house itself is a new build and the grey slate and sharp lines of the exterior complement the rugged landscape, while the interior is warm and welcoming with spacious open-plan living areas and underfloor heating throughout.
Start the day by tucking into breakfast at the bar in the open-plan living, dining and kitchen space and planning the day’s activities. This room feels light and airy thanks to high ceilings and the natural light flooding in through big windows and the bi-fold patio doors. On warmer days, open these doors out onto the patio and the large outdoor dining table and extend the living space outdoors. There is a second outdoor dining space in a sheltered courtyard at the back of the house, ideal for days when there’s a bit of an onshore breeze.
In the evenings, after a day at the beach, hunker down in front of the wood burner and get stuck into a good movie or a board game. When it’s time for bed, there are four bedrooms to choose from, two king size rooms and two twin rooms, all cosily furnished. Three of these bedrooms have ensuite shower rooms and views reaching northwards up the coast and out to sea. There is also a family bathroom with a bath, perfect for a soak after a long walk along the coastal path.
Cancleave is perfectly located for making the most of this spectacular part of the Cornish coast. Step straight out onto the South West Coastal Path and head up the coast towards Bude or down the coast towards Crackington Haven, both of which are an hour and a half’s good walk. There’s also a footpath across the road that heads down into a wooded valley and takes you to the pebbled beach of Millook. There are several sandy beaches nearby, such as Widemouth Bay and Bude where you’ll be able to hire surfboards and book yourself in for some lessons. There are other activities such as coasteering and stand up paddleboarding on offer from Freewave Surf Academy.
