A short drive from the centre of Dunbar in the southeast of Scotland, you’ll stumble across this striking lighthouse. Below it, you’ll find a pretty cottage with the same bright paintwork and some spectacular views out to sea. This peaceful retreat is perfect for those looking for a seaside escape but close enough to Edinburgh that you can hop on a train and be in the city centre in no time.
The Scandinavian-inspired interior of the cottage feels spacious thanks to the minimalist interior design, large windows and the light tones of the furnishings. The yellow theme used in the exterior paintwork has been used inside, creating warm splashes of colour and a welcoming atmosphere.
Sit back and relax in the cosy living room with comfy sofas, a fluffy rug and throws to keep you warm while you watch a film with the family. Or, head to one of the conservatories and enjoy the beautiful views from the sofa while getting stuck into a good book. The large kitchen and dining area is the perfect spot for everyone to help prepare extravagant dinners or tuck into a hearty breakfast before a bracing walk along the coast. Spend warm afternoons out in the garden with a late lunch sizzling away on the barbecue while you soak up the sunshine.
There are five bedrooms in total and the cottage sleeps up to 12 guests. There’s a double bedroom with an ensuite, three twin rooms and a twin bunk room which is perfect for the kids. All of the bedrooms have comfy beds and are furnished in the same laid back, Scandinavian style, making them relaxing places to be. They all have beautiful views of the surrounding countryside or out to sea.
Barns Ness lighthouse is just a short way from Dunbar, a pretty harbour town with a rich history. Find out more about John Muir, who was born in the town, at the museum dedicated to him. Visit the remains of Dunbar Castle right on the edge of the coast and overlooking the picturesque harbour. Enjoy a day at the seaside just down the coast at Cockburnspath where you’ll find Pease Bay and Cove Harbour and the beautiful red sandstone cliffs. There are plenty of walks in the local area along the coast or into the countryside, including the Berwickshire Coastal Path, and if you fancy a change of scene, the vibrant city of Edinburgh is just a short train ride away.
