Appreciate Scotland’s finer things in life with an escape to this listed country house in the idyllic Dalkeith countryside. Blending contemporary updates with heritage finery, The Old Mill House offers five-star luxury. Its personal touches are hand-picked with the utmost care and capture a timeless elegance that just has to be shared. Enjoy secluded country walks or days beside the fire, before mixing long chats, gourmet food and vintage wines.

The three-storey stone house dates back to the 18th century and is nestled on the rugged banks of the pretty River Esk. Surrounded by 3.5 acres of mature, landscaped gardens, it is a peaceful sanctuary and a sophisticated hideaway. Each traditional room has been exquisitely finished and fuses its original features with a modern, country décor. Colonial touches tell tales of the past and showcase fine Indian silks brought back from far off lands.

Its elegant living areas provide you with a warm and homely welcome and include a large state-of-the-art kitchen with designer mod-cons. An impressive sun room offers seductive garden views and has triple aspect windows which let the sunlight flood through. The classic drawing room is perfect for a pre-dinner tipple, while the beautiful dining table is on hand for three course dining. Spill out on to the garden terrace for a night beneath the stars, before having a sneaky nightcap in your own bar tucked inside the den.

Five sumptuous double/twin bedrooms are spread across the first and second floors and have a unique character with deluxe Hypnos mattresses. Discover Far Eastern textiles and chinoiserie wallpaper alongside delicate ceramics and handmade, woollen blankets. Quirky prints add an eccentric British twist and are joined by vintage fabrics and antique furniture. Sleek en-suite bathrooms bring the rooms right up to date and are complete with thick, fluffy towels and natural toiletries.

When you’re ready to head out and explore the local area, you’ll find a magnificent choice between city and country adventures. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike in the nearby Pentland Hills, or head out with a rod to the famous River Tweed. Stroll through the woodlands or picnic beside the river before admiring the interesting wildlife and wildflower meadows.

When you want to experience the sights and sounds of the city, the historic streets of Edinburgh are just 8 miles further. Known for its incredible architecture and fascinating culture, Edinburgh is one of Europe’s most captivating cities.
