Next to the railway station in Newtonmore in the Cairngorms National Park, you’ll find what looks like a signal box. However, this two-storey property is actually cosy holiday accommodation for two, complete with a sauna and panoramic views. The Signal Box has been beautifully constructed using wood from the local area for the structure, the solid oak floors and the pine sauna room. The cottage has been configured ‘upside down’ with the open plan living area on the first floor, making the most of the stunning views over the surrounding mountains and the River Spey.
The large open plan first floor is bright and spacious thanks to the large windows lining one whole side of the cottage. You can sit at the dining table or in one of the comfy armchairs in front of the wood burner and enjoy the stunning views of the rugged Scottish landscape. There’s also a fully-equipped modern kitchen on this floor, including a washing machine and a dishwasher, and logs are provided for the wood burner. There’s a small balcony off the first floor where you can relax with a morning coffee or an evening drink, immersed in the scenery. You’ll also find a gravelled area with a picnic table where you can enjoy your meals outside on sunny days.
You’ll find the cosy double bedroom on the ground floor, along with a utility room, which is perfect for muddy coats and boots after a long walk, and a bathroom. You’ll find the sauna in the bathroom which also has a luxurious waterfall shower, especially welcome after busy days exploring the trails or even the pistes.
The Signal Box is perfectly located as a base for exploring the Cairngorms National Park. There’s a wide range of activities on offer from walking and cycling to climbing and even skiing. The Wildcat Trail, a 7km circular walk, can be accessed just 150 metres from the front door and takes in some of the stunning scenery. Newtonmore itself is worth exploring, with several pubs and shops to discover, as well as a couple of excellent museums, including the Highland Folk Museum. Spend your days exploring the peaks of the Cairngorms or visiting the UK’s only wild reindeer herd or trying some watersports at Loch Morlich and your evenings relaxing in front of the fire at the Signal Box.
