In the heart of the stunning Sussex Downs, a substantial range of rolling green in Southeast England, The Hovel at Housedean is a cosy and characterful timber-clad, self-catering cottage for two, which started life as an animal barn. Perfectly positioned to take advantage of the miles of footpaths which make up the South Downs Way, The Hovel at Housedean is a dream cottage for individuals and couples looking to explore rural Sussex by foot, bicycle or car.
The home is light and airy, offering guests views of uninterrupted green hillside, broken only by the occasional grazing farm animal. In painstakingly converting this former agricultural building, the owners have retained a number of authentic features, like broad oak beams, and the original flint wall. The kitchen and dining room are arranged on an open plan basis, with bi-fold doors leading to the private patio and its views of the downs. This main inside space has everything you need for an enjoyable stay, including a functional contemporary kitchen with a wood-burning stove, Wi-Fi, and a Smart Television. Recline on comfortable sofas with a glass of wine, or step out into the yard, where a barbecue and outside dining set for four make for another magical Sussex evening.
The bedroom has been set up with a super-king sized bed, organic bedlinen and down and feather duvet. Babies or smaller children and toddlers can accommodated, as there is a choice of travel cot or small camp bed. The bathroom features a walk-in rain style shower as well as a freestanding bath tub, supplied with toiletries from a local supplier. Contemporary but classic in its aesthetics, this room has a pleasing design and feel, and benefits from underfloor heating. Between the restorative garden, charming, upscale country house décor, and modern amenities, The Hovel at Housedean is the dream getaway for walkers and explorers enjoying a mini-break in the Southeast.
East Sussex is known for its bucolic landscape, celebrated seaside towns, and subtle edginess. Housedean is located in the eastern part of the South Downs National Park, with the world-famous white cliffs of Seven Sisters Country Park close by. For a walk with a difference, head to the glacial valley of Devil’s Dyke, beloved by hang-gliders and hikers alike, before plunging down into the valley and returning to the dyke itself for a celebratory pint. The soulful, magical city of Brighton is just a short distance away, with its iconic pier, established music scene and buzzing nightlife. For a quirky and artsy small town atmosphere, you can’t beat nearby Lewes with its galleries, festivals and country pubs.
