There’s nothing boring about boarding these trains. Instead of your usual cramped commute, as you enter either of these wonderful carriages, your eyes are immediately drawn to the opulent fittings, luxury king size bed with feather duvet and huge windows that fill the space with light. This is more ‘Orient Express’ than ‘07:46 to London Euston’.
The two carriages, Paddington and Penzance, provide couples with a charming retreat in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside and were recently featured on Channel Four's 'George Clarke's Amazing Spaces'.
Up first is Paddington. Lovingly restored and converted, the Paddington suite boasts modern luxuries and mod-cons combined with nods to the carriage’s former role. Place your luggage in the overhead storage bins and settle down to a meal on the original table and chairs, still with their old upholstery! Full-length roller blinds ensure you get plenty of privacy, while the modern air-conditioning system keeps the temperature just right. In the mornings, prepare breakfast in the fully-fitted kitchen and sip on fresh coffee from the fine cups and mugs. There are no cardboard disposable cups here!
When it’s time to head to bed, retire to your large, luxury king size bed with a feather duvet and drift off dreaming of the next day’s adventures.
In the warmer months, enjoy your own private outdoor area. Relax on large outdoor sofas before dining alfresco on the outdoor tables and chairs. After a long day, sink into the soothing bubbles of the hot tub and let the stresses of modern life soak away.
Up next is Penzance. An additional sofa bed means this carriage can be used by up to four people who are happy to share the space. Penzance has been meticulously restored with some added extras to create a luxurious haven at any time of year. The carriage comprises the original train seating with four chairs and a table, perfect for settling in with a drink and pack of cards or a board game with the pretty view of the countryside through the window.
A cosy seating area with a sofa and armchair provides an excellent spot to unwind with a good book or watch a film together on the Smart TV. Beautiful wooden flooring with plush rugs complete this surprisingly spacious lounge area and you'll notice Art Deco inspired touches in the furnishings that hark back to a more elegant time of travel.
At the far end of the carriage is your compact and well-equipped kitchen area with a full sized oven.
When you're ready for bed you'll be delighted by the lush king size bed decked out with a warm feather down duvet and crisp luxurious linens. In the morning you can pad through to your bijou bathroom, enjoy a hot shower and freshen up for the day.
Make some coffee, throw open the carriage door and head out into your private sunny garden! You'll find seating where you can relax and enjoy the fresh air in glorious peaceful surroundings. A wonderful extra is the hot tub which is under cover so you can enjoy it in any weather.
You and your loved ones are also able to recreate the first class experience of the Great Western Railway by ordering a lavish afternoon tea to be delivered to you. Think scones with jam and cream, cakes and an array of sandwiches served with a big pot of tea.
Nestled in the Cambridgeshire countryside, near the cathedral city of Ely, there’s plenty for adventurous couples to do. Explore the history of the area at Ely Cathedral, Oliver Cromwell’s House or Ely Museum, or take in the natural beauty of The Fens with plenty of places for walking, cycling and boating. Further afield, wander the woods of Thetford Forest, go bird watching at Kingfishers Bridge Nature Reserve or explore the historic city of Cambridge. Get lost in winding alleyways, go punting on the River Cam and stop in one of the many cafes, restaurants and pubs.
