This beautiful 16th century timber frame cottage is set in the historic grounds of Waltham Abbey Church and was originally used as a priest’s dwelling. It’s just 50 metres away from where King Harold, the last Saxon king of England, is said to be buried. You’ll have views of the church grounds and abbey gardens on one side and the historic market square on the other, tempting you out to explore. If you fancy venturing a little further, both Epping Forest and the Lee Valley Regional Park are on the doorstep, offering scenic walks and the opportunity to reconnect with nature.
Inside, you’ll find a cosy hideaway packed with character with period features alongside modern luxuries such as a super-king size bed, a contemporary kitchen and a roll-top bath. Wooden beams criss-cross the walls and ceilings, there are doors thought to be centuries old and charming fireplaces now fitted with environmentally-friendly electric stoves.
You’ll be greeted by a cosy living area with a comfy sofa in front of a stove and a large smart TV. The kitchen is fully-equipped with everything you’ll need, including a range cooker, and is located just a few paces from a big dining table with a view of the church grounds. These grounds are used by the local community and you’ll see people going to and from the church, people walking their dog and tourists visiting this historic spot. You can sit out on the patio, watching the world go by, listening to the church bells.
Head up the steep stairs to find the spacious bedroom with the luxurious king size bed and views over Waltham Abbey Gardens. There’s a desk in the corner, great for remote working and the house has previously been used as a writer’s retreat. You’ll also find an armchair in front of one of the windows, making a cosy reading nook. There’s an ensuite bathroom and after a busy day exploring or a long walk in Epping Forest, the copper nickel freestanding bath is the perfect spot to relax.
You’ll find plenty to see and do right from the front door and the proximity to London with excellent transport links to and from the city means you can leave the car at home. Stroll through the church grounds and visit the beautiful 12th century church, said to be the resting place of King Harold who was killed at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Stroll through the town square where markets are held on Tuesdays and Saturdays, browse the independent shops and stop off for some coffee and cake in one of the cafes. If you fancy exploring a bit of the local countryside, there are lots of walking trails in the immediate area and Epping Forest is also nearby.
