Romantic cottage for two which dates back to the 13th century set on the outskirts of the pretty Suffolk market town of Hadleigh.
The Old Monkey is a romantic little cottage with plenty of character located in the ancient market town of Hadleigh in Suffolk. The cottage, which dates back to 1250, used to be a pub called The Kings Arms but was given the nickname ‘The Old Monkey’ to distinguish it from the many other Kings Arms in the area. Much of its original charm is still visible in features like the wattle and daub walls and exposed wooden beams while you’ll have plenty of modern conveniences at your disposal for a relaxing, romantic holiday.
Step into the cosy living room with a big comfy sofa set in front of an open fireplace. There’s an antique farmhouse table for two where you can enjoy romantic dinners in front of a gently crackling fire. Move through to the kitchen and you’ll find a delightful mix of the old and new with modern appliances, a beautiful Belfast sink and pots and pans hanging from the beams. The cottage has been carefully decorated and furnished using traditional lime wash and antique furniture and rugs to preserve as much of the original character as possible.
Head upstairs via the tiny, steep staircase which really indicates the age of the building, to the bedroom with its lovely arched ceiling showing off those beautiful ancient beams. This space is a cosy and romantic retreat with a comfortable double bed and the feeling of a little hideaway. The modern bathroom is located on the ground floor with a power shower.
The Old Monkey is located on the edge of the historic market town of Hadleigh, just a couple of hundred yards away from the closest shops. There is a pretty riverside walk which takes you around the town and several pubs in the centre where you can stop off and enjoy a traditional pub lunch. It’s a picturesque little town, with over 200 listed historical buildings and the church was painted by the famous Suffolk-born landscape painter, John Constable. Just around the corner from The Old Monkey, you’ll find a footpath that takes you along the old railway line. This is now a footpath or cycle way out to the beautiful Suffolk countryside.
