Located at the end of a gently winding farm track and surrounded by the rugged heather hills of the Scottish countryside, this beautiful barn conversion is a cosy romantic hideaway. After starting the day with a long walk in the Pentland Hills or exploring the coast of East Lothian, relax in the wood-fired sauna hidden away in the woodland garden. If you fancy a change of pace, the vibrant city of Edinburgh is just a short drive away. Or, simply curl up in front of the wood-burning stove with a good book.
The barn has been beautifully converted, retaining the original sandstone exterior, in-keeping with the 18th-century farmyard surrounding it. Inside, you’ll find the Scandinavian-inspired design creates a bright and airy space which is more contemporary than you might suspect from the outside. The double-height spaces and huge windows looking out to the heather-clad hills and woodland gardens create a relaxing atmosphere. The natural colour palette and simple materials used in the furnishings add to the overall sense of calm.
The kitchen and living areas are open-plan but on different levels and elegantly divided by a bespoke bookcase. Enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner before retreating down to the living room to snuggle up in front of the wood-burner. The bedroom is divided off from the rest of the space by a stylish ash screen which offers privacy while letting through plenty of natural light. You’ll find a comfy double bed, complete with luxurious, crisp linen and woollen blankets. Move through to the bathroom which has stylish marble tiles, underfloor heating and a rainfall showerhead.
Wander down to the woodland garden which has a private wood-fired sauna. This is shared with the other guests but everyone gets their own timeslot so you’re guaranteed privacy. Venture a little further and you’ll find yourself amidst some spectacular Scottish scenery. Eastside Cartshed is located on a working sheep farm, over 3,000 acres in size and encompassing some of the best-known parts of the Pentland Hills Regional Park. Without leaving the farm, you can climb to the top of Scald Law which, at 579m, offers some truly stunning views.
The location means that Eastside Cartshed is a haven for keen walkers but there are plenty of other things to do. For a relaxed day trip, Edinburgh is close by with its vibrant creative scene and rich history. Head to the coast to discover sweeping beaches and pretty coastal towns, or book yourself in for a day of mountain biking, surfing, horse riding or climbing.

Have you stayed here?
Leave a reviewAbsolutely loved this. Booked for my partners birthday and stayed a week in the eastside cartshed. Lovely accommodation, didn’t need for anything over the weekend there. Beautiful location, one mile up a track off the main road to a farm in the middle of the pentland hills. Stunning scenery, excellent walks, easy to get to Edinburgh within half hour, and exclusive use of the yurt for 2 hours one day which was such a greatt experience. Even braved going under in the plunge pool (with a view) which was freezing, but a welcomed break from the yurt heat! The owners are lovely and are there on site if you need them at all, but if not you’re left to enjoy the peace and quiet. Would happily come again!

My partner and I spent a lovely 2 nights here. The design is flawless and they have thought of everything. We enjoyed a couple of hours in the gorgeous sauna and due to the rainy Scottish weather the rest of the time relaxing next to the fire. It was such a relaxing stay. We would love to come back again.
