This historic property from the 1700s was built as a porter's lodge for the majestic Penicuik House. It is a magnificent location for a romantic retreat where you'll be able to reconnect with the countryside on your doorstep, as well as indulge in creature comforts thanks to the cottage’s luxury interiors.

Begin the morning lounging on the plush Hypnos mattress in the amazing super-king size bed as light streams in through the large window. This cosy bedroom is a perfect place to start and end blissful days with breakfast in bed or a sleepy herbal tea.

Wake yourself up with a walk-in shower in the en suite bathroom, stocked with top-quality VERDEN toiletries.

Head to the high-spec kitchen, where you can order in a breakfast hamper of delicious local produce, or rustle up something yourself. The kitchen is well-equipped with a variety of premium amenities, including Miele appliances, a Quooker boiling water tap and a Sage coffee machine.

After an activity-filled day hiking or cycling, the snug sitting room makes the perfect place to relax. Settle in to watch a film and warm your toes in front of the wood-fired stove. The underfloor heating will dispel any remaining chilliness.

Take advantage of the luxurious cedar hot tub on offer and heat up in the bubbles under a lovely leafy canopy. Enjoy romantic evenings on the terrace around the outdoor fireplace bathing in starlight after a delicious alfresco feast prepared on the Big Green Egg BBQ.

The local area is filled with opportunities to get out and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty – make a day of hiking the Pentland Hills with a picnic, or take your dog on a walk around the 3100 acres of the Penicuik Estate (there are 20km of trails to explore!). Exercise lovers will not be disappointed by the chance of cycling and horse riding through magical ancient woodland.

For a day trip, drive the 30 minutes to Edinburgh and take in the city's rich history with its impressive castle and cathedral, plus the bustle of shops, restaurants and pubs.
