The Royal Oak Exmoor is a gorgeous 12th century pub with a roaring fireplace, a great menu and a dog friendly attitude. Once a farmhouse it is now a very inviting pub and inn with 4 star accommodation. The latest addition to its impressive rooms is a self contained thatched cottage just 50 metres from the pub. It would be the perfect place for a large family holiday or a group of friends wanting to explore Exmoor and enjoy the attached pub.
The inside of the cottage is lovely. Decorated to a high standard with its history evident, the walls are white with original beams and flagstone floors, and the whole cottage is bedecked with Indian rugs and lots of big soft cushions wherever you settle.
The cosy heart of the house is the living room and lounge, one of which has a chesterfield sofa, comfortable armchairs and a stove set into the original fireplace. Rugs, dark wood and a few plants and ornamental decorations make this a lovely space for settling in by the fire with a good book and a glass of wine. There's a larger soft corner sofa in the other room, perfect for an afternoon snooze or a movie night.
The kitchen is also a great hub with all the mod cons and a large farmhouse dining table where everyone can get together for drinks or laze around and chat over a long supper.
The cottage comfortably sleeps up to eight and has one super-king size bedroom, a smaller double and full sized bunk beds. There is also a sofa bed which sleeps two adults. The master bedroom is particularly lush with a king size bed, and the other rooms are cosy with crisp Egyptian cotton and fake fur bed throws for chilly nights. There are two bathrooms, one of which boasts a freestanding tub as part of the master ensuite, and a second spacious modern bathroom with a large walk in shower, plus a separate WC downstairs.
After a good night's sleep you can take advantage of the complimentary Aesop toiletries before heading down for that first coffee of the day. If the weather is nice you can enjoy it out in the garden as you make plans for the day.
Thorne Cottage is nestled in the stunning village of Winsford in the heart of Exmoor National Park and the hosts recommend a walk to The Tarr Steps, a clapper bridge across the River Barle just three-and-a-half miles from Winsford. There is a lovely short walk that takes you around a loop of the river. If you like history, Dunster Castle is worth a visit. Fortified since the Anglo-Saxon period it has a lovely view over the village. Porlock Weir is also a good day out. It's a small settlement with a harbour which dates back to over a 1000 years.
There are other restaurants and pubs in the area as you explore, but you have The Royal Oak literally on your doorstep and they have a lovely menu that ranges from fancy food to a separate pizza menu, and something for the kids too.
Explore the beautiful Exmoor National Park, get your wellies muddy, then head back, freshen up in your lovely cottage and stroll over to the pub for a pint and something delicious to eat before settling by the fire with a nightcap.

Leave a reviewJust got home from 5 night stay at the gorgeous Thorn cottage, absolutely lovely building, host and location. The house is stunning, decorated lovely throughout, has everything you need, very luxurious. The host Jayne is lovely, very friendly, also has the pubs just a few doors up which is just as nice, great food, atmosphere and staff. Evan with the very wet and windy weather we still thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily come again. No on site parking but space just across the road, only thing I would add is maybe a radio as loved sitting in-front of the fire and bit of music would’ve been nice, otherwise nothing else needed. Location great for walkers/runners. Highly recommend a stay here
