For large groups looking to stay somewhere steeped in history with elements of modern flair, look no further than The Hyde. This 13th century country house and cottage have been lovingly restored with the help of English Heritage and the results are simply stunning.
The main house of the Hyde has room for 12 guests and the separate adjacent cottage can house a further eight. Nestled deep within the Netherwood estate on the borders of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire, you’ll get to live a life of private luxury during your stay.
Although the house is replete with mediaeval character, with flagstone floors and gorgeous wooden beams, there are plenty of dashes of modern comfort throughout too. Most bedrooms come with their own ensuite bathrooms, with some even coming with roll-top baths for anyone fancying a truly decadent soak.
The dining room is a glorious focal point, with its mahogany table capable of seating a full house of 20 guests. The kitchen itself is comprehensively kitted out, with a separate wine fridge and not one but two dishwashers. And if you don’t fancy cooking all the time and feel extravagant, you can arrange for your own personal chef to do the hard work for you!
The Hyde has plenty of opportunities for relaxing in total comfort. Choose between an opulent sitting room with a roaring open fire or a separate TV room that boasts a 50” screen and its own wood burning stove. And from the TV room, doors open out onto a wonderful south-facing garden terrace, allowing you to take in the majesty of the estate with ease.
You’ll have access to an embarrassment of riches in the grounds, including two private lakes where there are opportunities for fishing, kayaking and even wild swimming if you’re feeling bold. And after a cold dip, you can warm up again in the hot tub.
Not only that, but you could also try your hand at a game of tennis on the all-weather court, or a game of ping pong if you prefer something a bit smaller. And how many other properties can claim to have their own mini maze and narrow gauge steam railway?
Truly this is a venue that aims to please. For those with young ones, up to three cots and high chairs are available. Extra beds can also be made available on request as can children’s bikes, and there’s also room for up to two well-behaved dogs in the downstairs areas.
And if you manage to run out of things to do on site, you’re just a short trip away from the literary destination of Hay-on-Wye, as well as the picturesque cathedral cities of Hereford and Worcester.
