The beautiful Shuttaford Big Barn sits just outside the village of Holne in the Dartmoor National Park, offering rustic living in the Devon countryside. With its own hillside garden, this three-bedroom barn is a great family retreat in peaceful surroundings.
Shuttaford Big Barn is a recently converted barn on a 16th-century Dartmoor farmstead. Located on the edge of the moors, it’s perfectly located for walks by the River Dart and within reach of many of South Devon’s charming beaches.
The architect-designed conversion has reused many of the barn’s original materials, and features vintage furnishings, cast iron radiators and underfloor heating, and a large double-height country kitchen. The outside spaces are equally appealing, with a large lawn and patio with table and chairs, hammock and a secret garden perfect for sunbathing in peace.
Downstairs, you have an en suite king-size bedroom and twin bedroom, along with a family bathroom with a roll-top bath and shower. This is an ideal place to enjoy a relaxing soak after a long day exploring Dartmoor or lounging on some pretty Devon beaches. The spacious kitchen and dining area is also on this level, a beautifully appointed space with lots of light. Guests will find the kitchen a lovely spot to prepare meals for the group, which can be enjoyed on the quaint dining table in style.
A staircase leads up to the loft-like main living space, with a wood-burner, contemporary furnishings, two seating areas and a TV with a DVD player. You can stay toasty by the fire whilst socialising with your loved ones long into the night. There is another double bedroom on this floor, and a sofa-bed and cot are available if needed. And to top it off, you also get a lovely view of the surrounding hills from the large upstairs window.
If you fancy challenging your loved ones to a game, head out into the courtyard and visit the brand new games room. This fab space offers a bunch of fun games, including table tennis, table football and darts.
Holne is a pretty little village with a pub and shop, and nearby Ashburton is a larger town with a selection of galleries, bookshops and antique shops to potter around, as well as a regular farmers’ market. Once an important centre of the tin trade, it now serves as a great base for exploration of Dartmoor, the stunning scenery of which makes it a fine choice for activities such as pony-trekking, canoeing and fishing.
Roughly halfway between Exeter and Plymouth, both of the area’s main centres are easily accessible from Ashburton – a journey of around 30-35 minutes. A short distance from the South Devon coast, guests simply must explore the unspoilt South Hams with its rugged coast path and unspoilt beaches, Bantham, Bigbury and Salcombe. It’s a similar distance to the stretch of coast which is home to Devonian visitor favourites including Torquay, Paignton, Shaldon and Dawlish – opportunities to explore city, coast and country are near endless at Shuttaford Barn.
