Soothe your mind, body and soul and indulge in a restorative escape at these boutique country cottages in Dumfries and Galloway. Packed with luxury home comforts and stunning Georgian features, the three Gatehouses-of-Fleet Cottages are the ultimate elixir. Explore the characterful village inns and get to know the locals, or pack your walking boots and head out into the dramatic, open landscapes. Scotland’s untouched scenery is on show for all to see, so prepare for enchanting forests, sparkling lochs and secluded, sandy beaches
Set in the former schoolhouse of a picture-perfect village, the three 18th century cottages have been given a luxe-country finish. Expect Georgian sash windows and thick oak floorboards, alongside deep sofas, gourmet kitchens and decadent, modern bathrooms. Timeless original features have been carefully preserved, and are complimented by contemporary furnishings and state-of-the-art-tech. Thoughtful little extras have been handpicked with care; look out for the designer toiletries and kitchen fare.
Both Willow and Knocktinkle cottages have a warm and inviting design, with relaxed sitting rooms leading through to a contemporary kitchen-diner. Soft, natural shades add to their calming style while bold splashes of colour add a fresh and creative vibe. Get lost in your favourite book beside the roaring log burners or catch up on your favourite shows with the Smart TV and WIFI. Bespoke kitchens have everything you could ask for and more, including piles of pots and pans and a handy spice store.
The Granary is another delightful holiday home. Just for two this large one-bedroomed house is the perfect romantic getaway. Soft greys and flashes of green make this an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of normal life. Cosy up on the sofa with the comfort of a log fire or walk out in to the garden and enjoy the night sky of the Dark Skies Park. Wake up to the birds, roam the woods with the dog, enjoy the sunsets over the bay whilst experiencing nature at it’s best.
Each chic cottage has room for up to four across two sumptuous bedrooms hidden up on the first floor. There’s a large master bedroom with a king size bed and another spacious double room, both dressed with plush duvets, elegant throws and plump piles of cushions in Knocktinkle and a twin/superking and a king in Willow. Each cottage features two deluxe bathrooms each to finish the accommodation, one boasting a seriously indulgent tub and the other a sleek shower cubicle or wet room.
Beyond the stillness of your cottage, lies the magnificent Scottish countryside with its rugged moors, soaring peaks, and serene lake waters. Visit beautiful stately gardens or crumbling castle turrets, stopping off in tranquil country villages and ancient forest woodlands. Head to Galloway Forest Park to see its pristine night skies, or Kirroughtree Forest for its mountain bike trails. Mossyard and Carrick beaches can also be found nearby, along with the Kirkcudbright arts scene and Wigtown’s literary highs.
Closer to home, you can get to know Gatehouse of Fleet, exploring its rich, industrial history and mill exhibitions. Sample delicious home-cooked food in the local inns, or jump on the mammoth zip wire at Laggan Activity Centre. For a more relaxed stay, sit out in your courtyard garden soaking up the tranquillity of the village and its laidback, country ways.

Leave a reviewWe booked a very last minute stay in The Granary and it was perfect in every way. The quality of furnishings and cleanliness is first class. Everything you could need was provided including a quality coffee machine, plus a great welcome pack and the basics in the kitchen such as oil, salt and foil which makes life easy. Our first time at Gateway of Fleet and it’s a lovely village with a great park and woodland walks right on your doorstep. The cottage is prime location for these walks, straight out the gate of the shared courtyard (which is a fantastic little sun trap for sitting out) and onto the park…ideal for our dog. Great to have the pub over the road too plus plenty of bays/beaches to visit close by. Thank you Janet for letting us stay in your comfy cottage and for all the little thoughtful touches you provide…we hope to stay again soon and explore some more.
