Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Peak District, this cosy cottage for two is secluded, seductive and a short walk from Alstonefield village
You can discover the beauty of the Peak District with ease at Gardeners Cottage, situated in the grounds of Derbyshire’s Alstonefield Manor. Set amongst the hills and dales which makes the area so naturally appealing, this cottage offers quaint accommodation for two – and is pet-friendly.
This pretty stone cottage makes the ideal romantic retreat, combining cosiness with sophistication. Outside, you have a small seating area and a log store, because the inside is kept warm by a wood-burner in the lounge, as well as underfloor heating.
The low-beamed lounge has comfy seating, TV and DVD, with the kitchen sharing its subtle, neutral tones. Equally pretty is the shower room with fluffy towels and luxury toiletries supplied for your use. A painted wooden staircase leads you to the bedroom with its king-size bed and blankets as soft as the bathrobes.
There’s parking outside and direct access to the grounds of the manor. You can walk for miles right from the front door, whether you follow an established route or just wander where the will takes you. The area is just as good for cycling too – check out the Tissington or Manifold Trail and go exploring.
Dovedale and Ilam Park are amongst the area’s most popular and beautiful destinations, and many of the region’s attractions certainly make the most of its natural splendour. Among them, the Heights of Abraham in Matlock, where you can admire the landscape from above, in a cable car.
Chatsworth House and Gardens are one of the area’s big draws, and you will only be 40 minutes’ drive away at Gardeners Cottage. A similar distance away, Haddon Hall, an impressive country house near Bakewell, is also worth the trip.
For food, drink and a great country pub atmosphere, you will want to pay a visit to The George, Alstonefield’s famously good local inn. Its popularity has only increased since The Sunday Times chose it as one of the UK’s best country pubs, so give them a call to book ahead if you’re planning on dining.
At around half an hour from Buxton and the subterranean delights of the Poole’s Cavern caves, you won’t be short of places to visit when you stay at Gardener’s Cottage.

Have you stayed here?
Leave a reviewWe had a perfect winter weekend break at Gardeners Cottage. It’s small but beautiful, had everything we needed, and was very warm and cosy. We stayed with our dog and appreciated the tiny enclosed courtyard, access to the owners’ secure field and the wonderful Peak District walks from the door - we didn’t use our car at all. Definitely plan to return.
