Just a few miles inland from the Sussex coast, the Flint Barns enjoy the verdant surroundings of the Rathfinny Wine Estate near Polegate. Oenophile or not, everyone’s welcome to unwind with a bed and breakfast stay.

Those heading out to walk the South Downs will be more than fortified by the food on offer at Flint Barns. Fine breakfasts showcase local produce (of which there is plenty around these parts), and regular brunches and Sunday lunches are also arranged. The large, welcoming dining room is just part of the relaxed communal space – be sure to grab a spot by the wood-burner in the lounge, or enjoy the fresh air in the enclosed courtyard.
The Rathfinny Wine Estate produces its own Cradle Valley wine range, with a Sussex Sparkling due for release in 2018. Guests at Flint Barns can join a winery tour, subject to availability, and the estate also plays host to a number of other events throughout the year (yoga and writers’ retreats among them). The climate and soil here, as well as the estate’s south-facing aspect, are thought to be conducive to producing some of the best wines in England, so be sure to try a glass or two. Pop along to The Gun Room, the site’s shop, café and heritage centre, for a tasting.
Just outside the village of Alfriston, the Flint Barns are easily accessed. Buses stop in the village around two miles away, or jump in a taxi from Polegate or Lewes train station and be there in 15-20 minutes. Those driving will find it easy enough to venture out to Brighton or Eastbourne, in the region of 30-40 minutes’ drive from Flint Barns, and you should be at Gatwick Airport within the hour.
