Chatan is a unique cabin perched amidst a canopy of trees in the heart of a 300 acre rewilding project in Devon's Exe Valley. It has a distinctly old American Wild West feel to it with a little porch and bench and a rustic yet luxurious interior that makes it perfect for a couple seeking a break in beautiful and peaceful surroundings.
You'll be greeted by the estate manager who'll help with bags and get you settled in to the surprisingly spacious cabin which is spread out over two floors. The ground floor has a charming open plan kitchen and living area where you can chill on the sofa in a room that feels timeless and welcoming. Make a pot of tea, light the wood burner and pop on the radio and settle in for an evening of quality time. There's WiFi throughout so if you don't want to go off-grid you can bring a laptop and watch some movies.
When it's time to eat you'll find the kitchen both well-equipped and in harmony its surroundings, with all wooden counters and fixtures, plus a welcome pack that includes basic essentials. There's a fold out table and comfy wooden chairs where you can sit with a bottle of wine and enjoy a long lazy supper. There's even a BBQ if you fancy dining alfresco.
Upstairs is a large bedroom with a king size bed. You can sink into a peaceful sleep with only the sound of nature to lull you and when you rise you can start the day with a luxurious shower in the green tiled walk-in shower where you can indulge yourself with the Commune toiletries.
The tree house structure of the cabin provides its piece de resistance, a fabulous balcony in the treetop canopy where you can enjoy your scrambled eggs outside surrounded by stunning forest views. Out on the balcony you'll find the deep wood-fired bath, where you can spend a lazy hour or two soaking in bubbles with a book and the trees above you. At night this is a wonderful place to drink some champagne and star gaze whilst various wildlife patters around below. Look out for deer, owls, foxes, longhorn cattle and Iron Age pigs which thrive in the breathtaking 300 acre Cove Valley, a wonderful rewilding project restoring nature and its inhabitants to this area of Devon.
If you fancy heading into town the nearest by car is Tiverton. An archetypal market town, which has some lovely independent shops as well as a Pannier Market, Tiverton is packed with interesting history. Start by visiting the National Trust property of Knightshayes Court, one of the finest surviving Victorian gothic revival houses in the country.
Bickleigh Castle is ancient and mysterious, dates back to the 11th century, and is well worth a visit. For a fancy bite Frou Frou Bistro comes highly recommended, and there is always a seat at one of the town’s pubs if you prefer to sit back with a pint of real ale. Being nestled between two coasts, there are some good fish and chip restaurants - perfect for a takeaway when you don't feel like cooking.
