Hidden away on an Aberdeenshire farm, these three super comfy bothies are all about appreciating nature and getting together. Two are big enough for four, whilst the other is perfect for a couple, and all three are ingeniously designed and lovingly decorated.
As seen on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, The Barley Bothy was a labour-of-love build which embraces an upcycling theme. The craftsmanship is evident all around, as is this bothy’s unique character. A vintage log burner keeps the place warm and cosy, and you have plenty of hot water on tap.
In the bathroom, you may be surprised to find a luxurious roll-top bath, and there’s a wash basin and a flushing (vintage) toilet too. Two king-size box beds can accommodate up to four guests, plus there are old-style cooking facilities: a wood-fired range just seems appropriate here. Comfy seating and dining areas continue the reuse and reclaim theme.
Take a seat on the veranda and you’ll be in a prime position to admire the peaceful surroundings. The farm is full of barley grown for Glenlivet Whisky, strawberries, and indeed sheep, hence the names of the properties.
The Dairy at Denend offers a fresh take on a cabin in the woods and sleeps four guests. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by its impressive design with a curved tin roof and expansive decked area.
Inside the cosy interior has been cleverly arranged to fit in all the essentials. A comfy sofa and armchairs sit in front of the log burning stove - with a hob on top - and look out through floor-to-ceiling windows onto fantastic views of this stunning corner of Scotland. The well equipped kitchen has a wood burning range cooker with hob and oven, along with a fridge/freezer. A vintage larder cupboard has been updated and is now home to a cocktail bar, while there is also a reproduction of a Dansette record player with bluetooth connection. Also on the ground floor is the bathroom with its indulgent copper bathtub which allows you to enjoy a relaxing soak after a day exploring. Upstairs are the two bedrooms, with one having a king-size double bed and the other having single set of bunks beds. Both also have great views from uniquely curved windows.
Outside, the wraparound deck is the perfect place to leave muddy boots after a day out and about. This space is also an ideal spot to sit back and relax with a morning coffee or an evening tipple. Further tranquillity is offered by a hammock and the Vulcanus BBQ woodfired grill - so guests can stay out and keep warm late into the evening. Finally, the ultimate luxury is provided by a private hot tub, which has been designed to look like a milk tank and has plenty of room for four people.
With its wood-fired hot tub and mezzanine level double bed, The Sheep Shed is the romantic choice. Clamber up there and gaze up at the stars as you fall asleep – it’s a very special experience. The Sheep Shed features more vintage touches: the lengthy tin bath enjoys a new lease of life, while the magnificent range cooker is more than a kitchen centrepiece, it keeps your water hot too.
Once again, there is plenty of space to just relax in The Sheep Shed, both inside and out, and the views are just as good. Get the fire burning a few hours ahead and enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot tub to end the evening. There’s no better way to appreciate Boutique Farm Bothies. The owners can also provide local produce hampers for guests stays using a local butcher and baker, and they also provide homemade bread and pizza dough for the pizza ovens.
Aberdeenshire doesn’t skimp on natural beauty either, with miles of rugged coastline on one side and the mountainous Cairngorms National Park to the other. For walking, golf, fishing and whisky (check out the Malt Whisky Trails), this is the place to be.
Boutique Farm Bothies lie around an hour’s drive north-west of Aberdeen itself, so you can reach Aberdeenshire’s northern coast in a little over 30 minutes. The owners can recommend a host of eateries scattered across the area, so be sure to ask for advice. Now your only dilemma is which of these bothies you’re going to choose.
