A marvel of creative Dutch architecture – in Suffolk – Balancing Barn is no ordinary property. As the name suggests, part of this four-bedroom house is suspended above ground, and there is even a child’s swing suspended from its end. In six acres of private gardens, Balancing Barn is an unmissable place from which to explore the east coast.
Located on the edge of a peaceful nature reserve near Southwold, the house has been creatively designed inside as well as out. At one end, you will find an exquisite kitchen and dining room with direct access to the grounds, which features high-quality appliances and contemporary style.
At the opposite end of the property, the suspended living room has a great outlook on the natural surroundings through large windows on three sides. There’s a library feel to the space with plenty of books and some appealing furnishings – you’ll find ample seating alongside a music system, internet TV and wood-burner for winter nights.
Between these two areas, the house provides four immaculate bedrooms, each one with its own en suite bathroom. Solid oak furniture and thoughtful design are the hallmarks of these rooms, each of which has its own layout and features. Two of the rooms feature an in-room bath tub, while two can be configured with twin beds. Egyptian cotton sheets, hypo-allergenic pillows and duvets and high-quality toiletries are yet more examples of the attention to detail evident around the property.
Each room has a lovely view – outside there is a terrace area with seating so you can enjoy dining and drinks in the fresh air. There is also a fire pit for barbecues. On arrival, you can also look forward to a welcome pack with essentials like tea, coffee, milk and bread.
Clad in reflective steel tiles, this remarkable house is 30m long and provides some exceptional living spaces in a beautiful setting of woods and meadows. The design has been carefully considered, with some unique touches – bespoke carpets and canvasses based on the works of Constable and Gainsborough, for example, add bold colour with a nod to local history.
In the village of Thorington, Balancing Barn puts you within reach of locations such as Aldeburgh and Walberswick, and lies just three miles from the Suffolk Heritage Coast. Neighbouring Norfolk is close enough to add to your itinerary too – the city of Norwich is around one hour’s drive from Balancing Barn.
