London’s Shoreditch first came to prominence as the cool haunt of artists attracted by the large loft studio spaces. Ultimately (or should that be inevitably?) they were priced out and replaced by creatives of the new media kind. The area’s cachet continues to grow, thanks in no small part to the arrival of some decent public transport links and hotels like the Hoxton.

This first Hoxton hotel made waves when it opened in 2006, and it is still a popular destination hotel a decade later. It’s easy to see why; the Hoxton combines a great location with just the right amount of frills and a whole lot of cool kudos points.

The 210 bedrooms of the Shoreditch Hoxton are seemingly similarly sized but can be configured as twins or doubles. There are however eight ‘Concept’ rooms that have been designed to be a little different. Themes range from Urban Luxe to Cabin and even a room based on a bagel (yes really). These Concept rooms don’t cost any more but it’s hit and miss whether you get one so you’ll just have to say pretty please when you make the booking and hope that you get lucky.

Guest perks include free water, wifi and an hour of phone calls per day. Stock your mini-fridge with whatever you choose but leave enough room for your gratis breakfast bag.

Downstairs is the Hoxton Grill, run in conjunction with celeb favourite Soho House Group. It’s a destination in itself so an added bonus for anyone staying in the hotel. You’ll also find various creative having meetings in the Apartment, featuring seven work rooms and a pantry kitchen.

The local area is brimming with activity: from Spitalfields market to busy Brick Lane and on to the Columbia Road flower market; or lose yourself in the Barbican arts centre or head off to hear some of London’s more gruesome history on a Jack the Ripper tour. The hipsters might think they discovered the East End but it’s had an interesting nightlife for hundreds of years.
