This striking building in the pretty seaside town of Rye was once a St. John Ambulance Station. It has been expertly converted into a four bedroom home which has earned features in Grand Designs Magazine, and was even shortlisted for the World Architecture Awards. Step inside and it’s easy to see why. The spacious open-plan living spaces are both elegant and welcoming. The old ambulance doors open out onto the terrace to create an inside, outside space and, in the evenings, you can get the wood burner going in the centre of the space, effortlessly creating a cosy atmosphere.
This beautiful brick building looks right at home within the old town walls of Rye. It’s just a short walk from the station and from Rye High Street along cobbled streets and past medieval buildings. At the heart of the house is the wonderful open-plan living space with the double-sided wood-burner taking centre stage. This area has been furnished using neutral tones and natural materials highlighting some of the original features of the building, such as the original ambulance doors and the wooden beams, while being effortlessly stylish.
There’s an elegant, fully-equipped kitchen with a breakfast bar, conveniently positioned next to the dining area, centred around a beautiful sandblasted textured table. On the other side of the wood-burner is a spacious living area which is made cosy when the ambulance doors are shut or can be transformed into an extension of the patio on sunny days.
You’ll also find a double bedroom and a shower room on the ground floor. Head past the antique furniture purchased in the town and up the stunning staircase to find the other bedrooms. There’s a second double room and a twin room with beds that can be used as singles or doubles. The master bedroom features an ensuite shower room and a super king size bed, from which you can enjoy views over Rye.
The house is perfectly located to explore Rye. Just a few minutes’ walk from the High Street, you can spend a relaxed morning strolling through the famous cobbled streets and visiting the independent shops and cafes. If you’re looking to spend a bit of time outdoors, the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a great place to go for a walk and do a spot of bird watching. A day at the beach is also on the cards with Camber Sands just down the road and miles of golden sand and dunes to explore.
