Sitting amongst rugged cliffs with a beach at the bottom of the garden, this beautiful cottage offers guests seclusion, relaxation and peace only disturbed by the crashing of the waves onto the sand. This magical location is the ultimate place to retreat from the world and leave all the stress and worry behind while reconnecting with the sublime simplicity of nature.

Portamaggie Cottage, as well as its breathtaking location, has everything guests need for a romantic, relaxed and luxurious retreat. This warm and welcoming refuge is built from traditional whitewashed stone with a modern conservatory and outdoor deck to maximise the stunning ocean backdrop.

Guests will love resting from their journey in the cosy living room, sinking into the large sofa with a hot drink and enjoying the sounds of the ocean and the flicker of the flames in the wood burner. On stormy nights, batten down the hatches and curl up with a loved-one, watch a movie on the flat screen television and make plans for the next day. The immediate area is great for sea fishing and the kitchen is well-equipped for cooking up the catch of the day, or any of the abundant and delicious local produce. And if you did fancy popping to the beach for a day out, there are two beach chairs and a picnic blanket available for you to use!

A dining table, and further sofa, is found in the bright conservatory, where guests will enjoy the most memorable and romantic meals. Make a toast to the magnificent view of the beach and ocean beyond all whilst staying warm and dry in the cottage. In warmer months, pull open the conservatory doors and step out on the wooden raised deck and make the most of the long light evenings. Pour a glass of bubbly and slide into the steamy hot tub where guests may spot dolphins and minke whales out at sea.

When the fresh Scottish air heavies eyelids and it is time for bed, head up the wooden stairway to the calming bedroom. The large bed sits on thick carpet and has cosy throws and crisp linens which keep guests snug all night long. Open the window on warmer nights and fall to sleep lulled by the sounds of the sea.

Portmaggie Cottage is wonderfully located for nature lovers and guests will love rambling over the cliff tops spotting the abundant birdlife. The walk takes guests to the local harbour village Portpatrick where visitors can pick up supplies and enjoy food and drinks along the harbourside. Portpatrick is also home to a picturesque golf course.

Absolutely incredible location right on the sea in a private-feeling cove. Really cozy inside. Dreamlike starry skies can even be seen from the conservatory - a good place to snooze too. The sloped ceiling bedroom loft is above the living room and the bathroom is through the kitchen downstairs. The stairs, although quite steep and narrow, are generally manageable. No instructions to be found about any appliance but stove/oven both easy to use. Can log into your own Amazon/Netflix/etc on the telly. Wifi not fast but works. Power cut out a few times briefly but came back quickly. Check-in is at 4; check-out at 10. The cottage looks just insane from up above behind the lighthouse, and the seaview/sunset from the hot tub is unbelievable (can spot the shipwreck & Northern Ireland) although would be perfect if it was a tad hotter. Stargazing while soaking in the hot tub is just pure magic! No hot water the first night - trick is to keep the top dial pointing to the red " and the bottom dial turned to the low pressure indicator is for weak but hot showers! Lights outside not working so couldn't see the sometimes wobbly steps into the jacuzzi at night. Hair dryer provided but bring your own toiletries. Roughly 1.5 hrs on foot along the coastal Southern Upland Way to Portpatrick (maybe boggy) & the same amount of time to walk back on the nice single-track road. Some places closed from/in early November (Castle Kennedy/Kitchen Coos and Ewes) so better check before. Killantringan Bay's waterfall, Dunskey Castle, and Stranraer's Lady Bay are nice places close by. Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel's got fantastic food. Beautiful drive to the the Mull of Galloway. Around an hour's drive to Wigtown's bookshops, cafes, and bird hide. Wood of Cree Nature Reserve's Woodland Trail is a short loop with beautiful streams + waterfalls (maybe muddy). There was barely anyone anywhere in November.

What a fabulous cottage and location! Having found this place via a recommendation we were pretty sure it would be good but it surpassed our expectations. The beach is amazing in all weathers (very dramatic when the tides are high and the winds are blowing). The cottage has everything you need and the log fire makes a cosy living room if the weather is rough. Beautiful coastal walk to Portpatrick and we also explored the bays nearby. Thank you to Tara for being responsive with queries. We will definitely be back.

We have just come back from a perfect week staying in Portmaggie cottage. sure, the weather was good, but, the cottage was amazing. The location alone would warrant 5 stars. the furnishings, fixtures and fitting were all perfect for the cottage and gave a tremendous sense of serenity and peace. Who wouldn't enjoy the view out of the bathroom window cleaning your teeth in the morning?. The location is amazing . just above the beach. plenty to explore at low tide with some great rockpools, and as the tide turns watch the shipwreck appear and disappear. The walks from the cottage are splendid. One way a deserted sandy beach and the other way the coastal path to Portpatrick. I'm glad its an hours walk back after having great lunches at any of the 5 pubs Many thanks to Tara and Mark for all the hard work they have put in to Portmaggie cottage and for being so ready to help with any queries we had

Wow! What can I say? We’ve just stayed at Portamaggie for a few days and were completely mesmerised by this idyllic, cosy cottage nestled within a beautiful Scottish cove. From the moment we arrived, we felt relaxed, lulled by the fresh sea sir and gentle rolling of the waves. Upon entering the property we were struck by the warmth and attention to detail of the cottage. Everything has been carefully considered from the basket of kindling and logs awaiting our first fire in the log burner to the hot tub, clean and ready at 40 degrees with a welcoming bottle of Prosecco and champagne flutes. Beautifully and sensitively decorated throughout, this property did not disappoint. A well appointed kitchen, perfect for preparing our meals, a huge smart television to watch films snuggled on the comfortable sofa and a glorious sun room offering spectacular views of the beach, cliffs and lighthouse while we ate our breakfast. It was very mild for February and we enjoyed listening to the gentle sound of the sea as we slept in the sumptuous bedroom, waking to the incredible, uninterrupted view of the quaint, rugged Scottish cove. Our dogs enjoyed their stay just as much as we did. The highlight for them being a blowy walk along the cliff tops to the local town of Port Patrick where they slept in front of an open fire while we ate a very nice lunch at The Crown. Tara and Mark were wonderful, friendly hosts quickly responding to any questions we had and sharing their recommendations for eating out. Everything about our stay was perfect and we can’t wait to return.

We stayed here the first week in January 2023 although we had seen the pictures the whole place blew us away, we would never tire from the wonderful views and the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. The cottage itself has little quirky touches a tranquil and cosy atmosphere which made our stay extra special. Highly recommend The Crown in Portpatrick. Thank you Tara & Mark we will be back.

Don’t even know where to begin. From the moment we arrived it was perfect. The bottle of Prosecco on arrival, the beautiful hot tub with the most amazing views and the gorgeous fire to keep us warm once the night set in! Mark and Tara’s cottage blew us away! We will definitely be back to visit this little piece of tranquility. We had the best week, playing on the beach with the dog and having a beer in the tub. Can’t wait to be back soon.

An absolute GEM of a place. Isolated, cosy, picturesque! Sea. Stars. Log fire. Its exactly as it looks in pics. Loads of walks to do around the area. Our fur baby LOVED it. We will definitely be back. And would highly recommend it. Tara the host was super helpful and friendly. Available for random questions via text. I already miss cosy’ing up and sitting on the decking with a cuppa (gin!) and star gazing. Worth every penny. ??

We had an amazing week at Portamaggie Cottage. The cottage is so cosy, clean and done to a high standard. The setting is incredible and the perfect place to unwind and forget about everything. The view is stunning, the hot tub a great place to watch the sunset and the beach is quiet and beautiful. Perfect place for a relaxing holiday.
