Cosy cottage that was once the town police station and jail close to the spectacular Cumbrian coast and the Lake District.
Public transport accessible
Set in the heart of the charming coastal town of Millom, Hodbarrow House is a cosy hideaway with a fascinating past. This pretty little house was once the town's police station and jail and you'll spot a few features that help it retain some of its original character. There's still evidence of the old jail cells with their thick door frames and big iron hinges, however, beyond these quirky details the atmosphere couldn't be further from its former use. The cosy living room invites you to put your feet up in front of a merrily crackling fire while the beautifully furnished bedrooms promise a restful night's sleep after a busy day exploring.
The exterior of the house is clad in the beautiful slate used in many Cumbrian houses, adding to the charm and history of the building. Step inside and you'll find more exposed slate above the contemporary kitchen, fully-equipped for rustling up delicious meals during your stay. Gather around the rustic wooden dining table with natural light streaming in through skylights set high in the ceiling above. After dinner, snuggle up in the cosy living area with a fire going in the log burner and a board game or a film on the go.
The house is perfect for couples with one cosy bedroom, with a luxurious king size bed and its own ensuite with a walk-in shower and a heated rail where you'll find fluffy towels waiting for you. There's a second bathroom with a bath so you can enjoy a long soak after a challenging walk amongst the fells of the Lake District.
Located just south of the Lake District on the Cumbrian Coast, Millom provides a quieter base for those looking to explore this beautiful part of the country. This former mining town is surrounded by beautiful beaches, a wildlife reserve and majestic fells. Head to Silecroft beach and set off along the Cumbrian Coastal Way for stunning views across the sea towards the Isle of Man. On a clear day, tackle the hike to the peak of Black Combe for more spectacular views of the Cumbrian coastline and to the fells of the Lake District. For a more leisurely way to enjoy the scenery, make your way to Eskdale and hop on the steam-powered La'al Ratty for a beautiful train ride up to Ravenglass. With many of the famous Lakeland towns and villages less than an hour's drive away, Hodbarrow House also makes a great base for exploring the Lake District.
