Nestled on the banks of a private lake in peaceful woodland, you’ll find three beautifully crafted shepherd’s huts, each with its own theme. They are located within the grounds of an old hunting lodge on the outskirts of the city of York. The shepherd’s huts are adults-only, perfect for couples looking for a quiet, romantic escape, and each has its own hot tub and a gorgeous view over the lake.
Choose between ‘The Nest’, ‘The Roost’, 'The Warren', 'The Den' or ‘The Hollow’, each having its own personality but all equipped to the same high standard. You’ll be greeted with a basket of locally-sourced and homemade treats to help you settle in after your journey. Enjoy a cup of tea in the outdoor seating area, complete with cushions, blankets and views of the lake, or get that wood-fired hot tub going straight away.
You’ll be cosy inside the hut, whatever the weather outside, thanks to a wood burner with a full supply of logs. The bathroom has a shower and a heated towel rail where you can warm up your robes and fluffy towels. You’ll also find luxury toiletries from Neals Yard in the bathroom. There’s a well-equipped kitchenette with all the basics to get you started, including an induction hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge and a beautiful Belfast sink.
You’ll find a huge king-size bed, fitted with a mattress from the local Yorkshire Mattress Company and with Egyptian cotton bedding. There’s also a Smart TV and a Bluetooth speaker so you can put your feet up in front of a good movie or listen to some of your favourite tunes as you get breakfast ready in the mornings. The shepherd’s huts also enjoy exclusive access to the small private fishing lake.
If you can drag yourself away from this peaceful haven, there’s plenty to do in the local area. Hop on the bus at the stop just outside the property and you can be in the historic city of York in just 15 minutes. In the other direction, the Howardian Hills are calling, with the impressive Castle Howard and the picturesque market town of Malton to explore. If you fancy a change of scene, how about a trip to the seaside? The beautiful Robin Hood’s Bay, Scarborough and Whitby are all less than an hour’s drive away and you can reach the latter two by bus.

Great location for day trips to York, Castle Howard and Whitby. Top tip: Castle Howard has a brilliant farm shop with an exquisite range of foods and ready meals. We loved Hart Lake Escapes... Loved our stay at Hart Lake Escapes. Wonderful location, perfect hosts, everything top quality and attention to all the little yet important things. Our friends were in the next hut along and it worked really well. We had a large got tub that we all used and we enjoyed relaxing, barbecuing and sat outside together in the beautiful natural surroundings. The setting is simply perfect - will definitely return!

We can’t thank Andrew and Claire enough for the most perfect stay. The Shepards hut was an absolute luxury with wood burning hot tub set in such beautiful surroundings. We will definitely be back. Ideally situated to visit York only a short bus ride away from the tranquil setting.

Fantastic stay in a lovely, private location with a boutique cabin and a hot tub. The hosts, Andrew and Claire, are so hospitable too and nothings too much trouble. With a bus stop at the end of the drive to York or Scarborough, it means days out are easy and the car, optional. Highly recommend.
