This is only possible where a Cathedral has stood for centuries forcing rings of development to swell the city housing outwards as it extended through the centuries. That is what is on offer here in the Cathedral Close in a unique and sensational apartment for just two adults without children or a pet (a baby could be accommodated in a carry cot). This is a wonderfully located property with connecting bus routes just a short walk from the front door that can take you around the city and to nearby towns and villages.
Exeter Cathedral was built on a flat plain near the top of a highly defensible hill. The Close, the size of a cricket field and grassed over, contains a copse of century old specimen trees, a giant magnolia and copper beeches, and is enclosed on three sides by a line of period houses, an ancient stone wall and Exeter Cathedral school. This space also hosts the Christmas Fair and other events throughout the year! This is what you have to look out on when staying at Cathedral Green.
At night the Close is a magical background to a rising moon seen from the large art gallery/reading room/observation point, available to visitors in this superb, unique, first floor apartment within the southern half of this wealthy merchant's mediaeval mansion.
The entire mansion was gutted internally, redesigned and reconstructed in 2018 by leading architects, with the facilities of this particular apartment specified by the current owners to incorporate best practice, including features such as underfloor heating below parquet floors throughout, centralised vacuum cleaning, air filtration, a Quooker tap and more.
The king size bedroom, fitted with an LG OLED TV, overlooks an accessible and private 200 square foot flowering terrace offering sunshine for coffee drinking in the morning. A short passage connecting the walk-in shower ensuite is lined on opposite sides with full-length mirrored wardrobes. Outside the bedroom the entrance hall is furnished with Queen Anne cabinets and appropriate period armchairs. There is a second guest W.C washroom in the common hall, lined with paintings, which leads to the large reading/relaxation art lounge with observation windows overlooking the cathedral entrance. This forms a spacious suite, effectively, of seven rooms and spaces.
Many guests find it endlessly fascinating to study the swooping and soaring, twisting and turning of large birds constantly passing the gigantic windows at eye level and below.
At first sight guests must wonder at house rules not allowing food in any rooms, but they quickly realise how convenient it is to have the Cote Brasserie or Ivy open all day, downstairs, including free breakfasts of freshly cooked English and other choices, such as vegan, vegetarian or non-allergic. Also within 100 yards of your front door are some great Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Lebanese, Moroccan and Turkish restaurants.
On Exeter Quayside, worth a visit for its Portofino atmosphere, Rockfish is a fabulous place for lovers of all things seafood and their branches are available in each of the coastal towns nearby, in Sidmouth, Exmouth, Topsham, Budleigh and larger towns further away.
If you wish to venture further afield, you have some delightful seaside towns all within 10-15 miles of the city. An hour’s drive will get you to Lyme Regis and the main Jurassic Coast fossil beds and museum. Or in the opposite direction, head west to Dartmouth, a world-class, picturesque yachting centre. The excellent district bus services will also take you there and back in a day, giving you enough time to swim and eat.
Much shorter trips lead to the luxurious farm shop, Darts Farm, just outside Exeter to the East, and Powderham Castle to the South West. You can also visit Dartmoor's magical National Park, which is a haven for nature lovers with winding rivers and dramatic tor views. Five minutes away is "Talk of the Year" in Exeter, the new £44m leisure centre with luxury spa and 8 lane seawater swimming pool. Finally, for classical enthusiasts, there are four notable dates each year for Grand Opera by the ENO in the Northcott Theatre on the University campus and six days with the Bournemouth Philharmonic at the Grand Hall both directly accessible in a car, and music festivals at Budleigh Salterton and Dartington Hall near Totnes.
