This historic gem sits amidst the rolling countryside, where time slows down, and the past comes alive. With both a cottage and a barn on offer, both sleeping two, there are two fabulous accommodation options for you and your loved one to choose from.
This charming Clachan is made up of a lovingly restored traditional cottage and a small barn, both brimming with character and history. The laneway that winds through the middle once welcomed travellers on horse and cart, where they would pause for a ceilidh on their way to Sunday Mass at Granaghan Church in nearby Swatragh. The original cottage, dating back to 1830, was last home to Patrick’s great-great-uncle, Bernard, or “Barney,” as the locals fondly called him.
Award-winning architect Patrick has reimagined the Clachan, blending its historic charm with a cutting-edge, minimalist design.
Inside, the cottage is a luxurious hideaway perched above the historic stone ruins of Great-Great Uncle Barney’s 1830s home. This spacious retreat offers a perfect blend of rustic charm and contemporary design, making it ideal for couples looking for a peaceful escape in the Irish countryside.
Step inside to discover a cosy haven, complete with a Jotul wood-burning stove to keep you warm on cooler evenings. The bespoke staircase leads you up to the open-plan living space, where south-facing windows flood the room with natural light, and an outdoor balcony lets you soak up panoramic views of the surrounding farmlands.
For a truly unique experience, head outside to indulge in one of the two outdoor soaking baths, both offering stunning views of the rolling hills. As night falls, the cottage transforms into a magical sight, with its specialised lighting and cladding giving it the appearance of floating across the landscape.
With thoughtful touches like a pod coffee machine, boiling water tap and a swing in the courtyard, the cottage is a dreamy retreat where old-world heritage meets modern comfort.
The barn, once home to the family’s beloved bull - also named Barney - has been transformed into a sleek, contemporary space that merges old and new in a stunning barn conversion. Step inside and you’re immediately greeted by a stunning concrete fireplace and chimney - an eye-catching centrepiece that sets the tone for this stylish, modern retreat. Tucked neatly to the side is a compact but cleverly designed shower room, blending seamlessly into the space.
A custom-built staircase leads you up to a snug sleeping nook, where you can look down over the open-plan living area below. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the contemporary, minimalist design. At the back, a door opens out to your own private patio, where the peaceful views of the surrounding farmlands offer a true escape into nature.
Though intimate and cosy, this barn conversion has everything you need for a tranquil getaway, whether you’re a solo traveller or a couple looking for a romantic retreat.
Whether staying at the cottage or the barn, you’ll no doubt want to venture out and explore the local area. There are a number of incredible nature walks nearby, which take you past stunning scenery, including the Drumnaph Nature Reserve, the Carntogher Way and
Portglenone Forest.
Lovely beaches in the area include Portstewart Strand, Benone Beach, White Park Bay and Tyrrella Beach, which is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Mourne Mountains.
Other great attractions nearby include the Old Bushmills Distillery - the world’s oldest whiskey distillery, the Giant's Causeway Visitor Center, Titanic Belfast and the Ulster Museum, which showcases Northern Ireland's rich past and present.
