In a peaceful and beautiful corner of the North Pennines, right in the centre of the picturesque village of Romaldkirk, is the Rose and Crown. This 18th Century coaching inn is now a stylish hotel that has not lost any of its rustic charm.
There are many period features that help maintain the olde worlde feel of the building, including beamed ceilings, exposed stone walls, and an array of antiques, artwork, and furnishings that are perfectly in keeping. There are 14 rooms set across 3 locations - 7 across 2 floors in the main inn and 5 more in the 1-storey, courtyard mews building. Three of the suites also have sofa beds that are ideal for children.
A further 2 rooms can be found in the self-contained cottage known as the Monk’s House that adjoins the Rose and Crown. This is ideal for a family holiday as it incorporates 2 double rooms and a sitting room with a sofa bed.
Each of the double rooms has an en-suite bathroom - with most having a bath and shower, although some only come with a shower. The decor and furnishings are modern country in style, with wool throws, comfy armchairs, and oil paintings among the many thoughtful touches.
Guests are welcome to relax in the sitting area in the main inn, which boasts a wood burning stove, deep sofas, and battered leather armchairs for an authentic feel. When the weather is fine there are picnic tables to use on the gravelled terrace at the front of the property, where those staying can enjoy a cold pint bought from the pub. This is used by locals and residents alike and inside has stone flagged floors and a large open fireplace.
Feel free to dine in the bar as well and enjoy one of the superb options from the Modern British menu. The produce is well sourced locally and there is also a candle lit dining room for those who prefer a less bustling atmosphere.
The Teesdale village of Romaldkirk is lined with pretty cottages and is the ideal starting point for many amazing walks - such as the Teesdale Way. The High Force waterfall, Eggleston Hall gardens, and Barnard Castle market town, with its antique shops and Bowes Museum, are also just a short drive away.
