Nestled amidst the rolling landscape of the western Lake District at the foot of Black Combe, The Wayside Cottage is a quiet retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. This pretty cottage dates back to the early 1600s and has been lovingly restored, preserving its original character while adding a few modern creature comforts. And thanks to great access to the surrounding scenery and nearby beaches, it offers you and your loved ones a relaxing base from which to explore this delightful part of the country.
Step inside and the interior immediately feels warm and welcoming with its traditional country cottage style. You’ll find the original beams overhead and flagged stone or wooden floors underfoot. The cosy kitchen has some beautiful stonework over the Aga and a butler sink set beneath the window. Gather around the table in the dining room for delicious home-cooked breakfasts to set you up for a day’s walking in the fells and refuel in the evenings with cosy dinners.
If you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet, put your feet up in the conservatory with its big windows with views over the private garden and the surrounding countryside. This is a great spot to get stuck into a good book or enjoy a coffee in the morning. There are two spacious bedrooms, both with comfy king sized double beds and crisp, white bed linen. One of the rooms also has space for an additional single bed, making the cottage a good choice for a family. There are also two bathrooms, one with a shower over bath where you can soak those aching legs after long walks and the other with a luxurious waterfall shower.
The Western Lake District is a great location for those looking to reconnect with nature and enjoy some spectacular landscapes away from the crowds around Windermere and Ambleside. You’ll find spectacular views from the tops of the fells and sweeping isolated beaches. This is a great location for keen walkers, trail runners and cyclists. During your stay you have direct access to the fells via a private path that takes you from the cottage out into the marvellous surrounding scenery. You'll also be nicely placed for a day out on the nearby beach.

Leave a reviewWe had an excellent time at the cottage! So cozy, so beautiful! And the host took time to show us all the areas to visit, show us around. Our kids had the best time surrounded by nature. Mostly recommended!

We had a lovely time here - the cottage was very clean, well kitted out, very comfortable and peaceful. The location at the bottom of the fell is stunning. Great to go for walks directly from the back garden either to the fell or to the beach. The owners provide a very helpful online guide to the property and surrounding areas. We would like to go back to visit another time.
