Enchanting home in a charming Kent village offering a peaceful retreat in a converted Grade II listed building.
Welcome to The Oast, an enchanting Kentish retreat that seamlessly blends historic charm with modern luxury. This traditional oast house, originally built for drying hops in the beer-making process, has been lovingly restored into a cosy, elegant home. Nestled in the heart of the historic village of Newenden, it sits opposite the village green—home to cricket matches since 1301—and near the 12th century church and a delightful 17th century pub, The White Hart Inn, where you can enjoy local beers, wines and superb home-cooked meals.
Despite its central village location, The Oast offers a tranquil escape with sweeping south-westerly views over the Rother Valley. The extensive outdoor space includes a sunny, sheltered terrace with patio furniture and a charcoal BBQ, a large garden and a one-acre paddock perfect for children to play safely. By the stream, you'll find another patio with seating for four, a BBQ and a charming shepherd’s hut with a table and chairs for six.
This Grade II listed building, converted in 1995, retains many original features, including the historic hop press at the top of the stairs, while boasting modern amenities like high-speed wireless broadband and excellent central heating.
You’ll find plenty of dining options within walking distance, from The White Hart Inn and Nibbles Café to The Lime Wharf Café and Newenden Kebab take away. There’s also an outstanding Indian restaurant half a mile away and a fish and chip shop a mile south in Northiam.
The Oast is designed for a memorable family getaway. The roundel drawing room, with its plush sofas, Smart TV, DVD player, and hi-fi, offers a serene spot with breathtaking views down the valley. The adjacent sitting room, featuring a cosy log-burning stove (logs provided free of charge) and a Smart TV, is perfect for snug winter evenings.
The traditional country kitchen, equipped with a range cooker, is a delightful space for preparing meals, while the adjacent dining room, with its beamed ceiling, combines contemporary style with historic character. The ground floor also includes a convenient cloakroom with a shower, WC and hand wash basin.
A fourth bedroom with twin beds (convertible to a double if needed) is located on the ground floor. If this room isn’t required, a discount is available. Nearby is a bathroom with a shower, wash basin and WC.
Upstairs, past the old hop press, are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The round master bedroom features an ensuite bathroom with a bath, shower, hand wash basin and WC. Each bedroom is equipped with an LCD TV with Freeview. The master suite has a king size French antique bed, the second bedroom a standard double bed and the third bedroom can be configured as twin beds or a double. The family bathroom includes a large walk-in shower, hand wash basin and WC.
The Oast is listed by the managing agent Bloom Stays.
