Tucked away in the Norfolk countryside, just south-west of Norwich, you’ll find The Lakes. This beautiful spot features acres of open fields, wildflower meadows and pretty expanses of water where you can go for a dip or a relaxing paddle. The area has been restored to nature after years of being a working gravel pit and is now a haven for the local wildlife. There is a range of glamping accommodation around The Lakes, from traditional shepherd’s huts to yurts and bell tents which can accommodate 18-22 people in total. The accommodation can be booked separately for getaways with families or the site can be booked exclusively for big groups.
There are four traditional style shepherd’s huts, each named after a bird that you might be lucky enough to spot around The Lakes. Mallard and Teal huts both sleep two adults in a cosy double bed, made even more luxurious by wood-burning stoves which will keep you toasty even on cold evenings. Each has its own bathroom facilities, kitchen shelter and fire pit making them perfect for a romantic trip away with a bit of privacy.
Pheasant shepherd’s hut also sleeps two and can be found nestled by some trees overlooking one of the lakes. This hut has cooking essentials such as a small camping stove to get you going in the mornings and more ambitious meals can be rustled up in the communal kitchen in the safari tent known as the Nest. Small families might want to go for Barn Owl, a shepherd’s hut that sleeps four in one double and two single bunks.
There are two yurts, Kingfisher and Skylark, each of which can accommodate four adults or a family of six. They both contain one double bed and four ‘Disc-O-Bed’s can be arranged inside as well. The yurts are set up on decking and have a cosy feel with woodburning stoves warding off any chill in the evenings. They have their own bathroom facilities and share the communal kitchen in the Nest.
If your chosen accommodation doesn’t have quite enough sleeping space for everyone you want to bring along, bell tents can be set up close to your shepherd’s hut or yurt. These can sleep up to five children or four adults, are kitted out with air beds and will share the facilities allocated to your hut or yurt.
The Lakes is a wonderful place to switch off from the busy day-to-day and reconnect with nature. There are 75 acres of meadows, woodlands and lakes to explore and you can easily spend your whole trip on the site itself. Build dens with the kids in the trees, toast marshmallows over your campfire and go for morning swims in the lakes. There’s also a small Topper for those who like sailing and paddleboards and kayaks are available. If you do want to venture further afield, Norwich is close by and has plenty to do, from exploring the medieval streets to shopping to relaxing with a coffee in one of the independent cafes. Thetford Forest is also nearby with lots of activities on offer, such as Go Ape and Segway adventures.
