The detail

Set overlooking the beautiful Eden Valley in the heart of Cumbria, Owl’s Nook Barn offers a peaceful escape for groups of friends or families looking to get away from it all. This newly converted, 19th century barn is packed with charm and character with lovely period features still on display. Plenty of modern luxuries have been added, such as underfloor heating to keep you cosy and the sauna and the hot tub will help you unwind after a long walk in the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales.

You’ll find Owl’s Nook Barn in the small farming hamlet of Bleatarn on an elevated spot that provides fantastic views. Step inside and head upstairs to find a bright and airy open-plan living space on the first floor, where you can kick back and relax after a busy day exploring. The kitchen and dining area features a beautiful exposed stone wall and a double height ceiling that creates a lovely sense of space. After rustling up some dinner in the well-equipped kitchen, head through to the lounge area that’s tucked away under the mezzanine. This is a cosy spot where you can put your feet up in front of the wood-burning stove and get stuck into a good film or a board game.

From the living area you can head up the spiral staircase to the double ensuite bedroom on the mezzanine level or down to the two further bedrooms on the ground floor. The bedrooms are all beautifully furnished in neutral, relaxing tones and with double beds made up with luxurious linen, promising a great night’s sleep. They all have access to their own contemporary bathrooms, complete with powerful showers and toiletries.

When the sun is shining, head outdoors to make the most of those stunning views. If you feel the need for a bit of pampering, make use of the sauna or sit back and relax in the hot tub. You’ll find a table and chairs on a little patio next to the pond, perfectly positioned for enjoying the views over the valley. This is the perfect spot for a cup of coffee first thing in the morning or a glass of something as the sun sets. If you’re lucky, you might spot some of the local wildlife making their way through the surrounding fields, including deer and red squirrels. There’s a larger outdoor table up on the terrace where you can all gather for a BBQ and plan your next walk in the beautiful surrounding countryside.

You’ll find plenty of exploring to do with the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the dramatic North Pennines all within easy reach. There are plenty of walking trails and cycling routes suitable for everyone whether you prefer a leisurely walk along the banks of a lake or a challenging climb up into the hills. Pack a picnic and explore the countryside around the barn, stopping off at the enchanting Rutter Force waterfall and mill pond along the way. Head a little further north and you’ll come across Long Meg and Her Daughters, an ancient stone circle steeped in mystery. Lacy’s Caves is also nearby, where you can explore a series of chambers carved into the sandstone cliff overlooking the River Eden.
