Ice House is a fabulously located home that offers groups of up to four guests an exquisite view of the sea as well as the mountains and islands of Sutherland and Wester Ross in North West Scotland. Wonderfully situated on the edge of the sea, this modern and stylish retreat guarantees you and your loved ones a peaceful and restorative stay. Originally constructed in the 19th century to store ice for the nearby salmon fishing station, the Ice House was rescued from dereliction and renovated in 2023.
As you arrive you’ll be in awe of the incredible surroundings and views out over the water. And once you step inside, those same views are the centrepiece of your stay thanks to huge windows that offer you the perfect vantage point from which to enjoy them.
Unwind with your loved ones in the stylish living area, which has a big luxury sofa and a Danish wood-burning stove to keep you toasty and warm all year round. There’s also a comfy window seat and a bird watcher's scope so you can spot birds flying out over the water. The sitting area also features a smart TV for movie nights or box set marathons.
When it comes to meal prep, the kitchen area in the open-plan living space is nicely equipped with a Rangemaster electric Range Cooker, two fridges, a dishwasher and a freezer. You also have a range of other high-end appliances at your disposal, including a Nespresso coffee capsule machine and milk frother, a food mixer and a Ninja air frier. And once dinner’s ready, you can enjoy meals on the superb Homer Scot-Scandi dining table that comfortably seats up to eight on super-comfy vintage Ercol dining chairs.
When night falls, head down the beautiful handmade staircase to the two lovely bedrooms, which share a bathroom and a separate shower room. The two fabulous bedrooms are both spacious and feature king size beds and dual-control electric blankets. Both bedrooms also feature sliding glass doors that open up onto a wooden deck just three metres from the sea, making it an ideal place to sit with your morning coffee.
For guests desiring single beds, a bunk room at the rear of the ground floor can be made available upon special request.
There is no shortage of potential activities to enjoy during your stay at the Ice House, whether you seek a family vacation, a retreat from the modern world or Highland adventures. Local offerings encompass golf, sea and fly fishing, walking, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, whale watching and sailing. You might even be lucky enough to spot the resident otters that live in front of the house - but keep your eyes peeled as they can be difficult to spot.
The Ice House is your gateway to stunning beaches, such as Mellon Udrigle and Gruinard, which are ideal for walks and swims, while Red Point and Gairloch Beach promise unforgettable days out. Walk or cycle to Slaggan’s ruined village and beach for a unique adventure, and visit the famous Inverewe Gardens in Poolewe.
Enjoy fishing, sea kayaking or wildlife cruises nearby, while local museums like the Arctic Convoy Museum and Gairloch Museum offer cultural insights. A library of maps and wildlife guides are provided, and excellent cafes and restaurants await in places such as Poolewe, Gairloch and Ullapool.
