Set amidst the spectacular coastal landscape of the far north of Scotland, House of the Northern Gate is a beautifully restored nine bedroom Baronial house, perfect for big celebrations with friends and family. Located on its own estate on Dunnet Head, mainland Britain’s most northerly point, there are 1,800 acres to explore. You’ll be able to hike across moorland, swim in lochs, enjoy the white sands of Dunnet Bay, explore hidden caves and soak up the spectacular views out to the Orkney Islands, all on the estate itself.
Step into the grand house through the large entrance hall and into the main hall and you’ll find the interior feels bright and spacious. The ground floor has been designed for entertaining and if you’re looking for a spot to relax with friends and family you’ll be able to take your pick between the lounge, the comfy TV room and the cosy library. There’s a grand kitchen, fully equipped for large groups, even extending into a specialist catering kitchen for special occasions. This is conveniently just across the hall from the big dining room which has beautiful views out over the water on two sides.
Head upstairs to find the nine bedrooms, seven doubles and two twin rooms, all with spectacular views. They’re all beautifully furnished in a style in-keeping with the history of the house. You’ll find four poster beds, roll-top bathtubs and antique furnishings alongside both traditional and contemporary artwork.
The house has recently been renovated and redecorated, ensuring the house and gardens are as sustainable as possible while retaining its original character. This has brought the house right up to date in terms of comfort while celebrating its history with plenty of its original paintings and furnishings still in use. It can now run entirely on renewable energy, even in the middle of winter, using ground source heating, solar and local wind.
You’ll find plenty of things to do without stepping foot off the estate where you can enjoy long walks along the clifftops or sunny afternoons on Dunnet Beach. Head along the coast in one direction and visit Thurso, the mainland’s most northerly town, or to the Castle and Gardens of Mey in the other, once owned by the Queen Mother who bought it after one of several stay at the House of the Northern Gate in the 1950s. Carry on a little further and you’ll reach John o’ Groats where you can catch a 40 minute ferry to Orkney and explore the islands’ Neolithic sites and visit the seal colonies. For the more sporty, there is surfing, RIB boat rides, and stand up paddle boarding from Dunnet Beach. And there are distilleries galore, golf courses and fishing.
