Just outside the Joshua Tree National Park, Pioneertown was originally a Hollywood creation, serving as a spectacular set for Westerns and TV shows. It now provides the rugged backdrop for Homestead Modern No.1, an architect-designed home in three parts which offers privacy and luxury in the California desert.
The Homestead consists of the main house, the separate Casita and a rather special 1973 trailer which looks right at home parked up by its modern counterparts. You can rent just the house, the house and Casita or all the three – whatever you go for, you will have the whole place to yourself.
The main house is big enough for two, with one bedroom, one bathroom and a full kitchen, living and dining area. It’s packed with luxuries, like stainless steel appliances and a 60” TV with Blu-ray, DVD, satellite and DirecTV. There’s a king-size bed in the bedroom, and lots of outdoor space with seating and dining areas.
Even better, you’ll have use of a high-end gas barbecue, outdoor showers, a hot tub and a cooling cowboy tub.
While the Homestead feels remote, it’s all within walking distance of what is nowadays Pioneertown’s main attraction, Pappy and Harriet’s. This legendary roadhouse serves up steaks, ribs, burgers and the like along with regular live music, occasionally courtesy of some pretty big names. Such is its reputation, it’s well worth booking ahead.
There aren’t so many movies made in Pioneertown these days, but you may still catch a mock gun-fight on nearby Mane Street which has retained its film-set look. It’s just a short drive to Yucca Valley, a much larger town with all the modern-day amenities you could need, and the fringes of the Joshua Tree National Park itself.
It’s here you can get involved in all kinds of activities, from rock climbing to horse riding and hiking, or get to know the wildlife with the help of guided tours from the park rangers. It pays to do some planning before venturing in – at nearly 800,000 acres, the park is vast and remains a wilderness, but therein lies its attraction.
Ready for the adventure? Homestead Modern No.1 gives you the chance to explore a new side of California.
