The George & Dragon is an old world coaching inn where you can seek comfortable lodging, hearty food and a good drink. Located in the small village of Clifton and with the beauty of the Lake District on its doorstep, it is the perfect place to stop off for an old-fashioned country escape with fine food.
Dating back to the 18th Century, The George & Dragon building has been lovingly restored to retain many of its original features. Its whitewashed stone exterior sits beautifully against the lush natural backdrop, while its roaring fires and warm atmosphere will draw you in. The downstairs bar and restaurant oozes charm and is the place where you can enjoy exceptional food and drink in a relaxed style. Winner of the Dining Pub of the Year in 2014, the food is organic, fresh and simply divine.
Above the traditional bar and restaurant are eleven characterful bedrooms each with their own individual designs. Personal touches reflect the inn’s rich local heritage while sumptuous beds and en-suite bathrooms add a certain modern style.
The two deluxe rooms are the largest of the set and have luxury touches alongside rural views. Here you can soak in your exclusive roll top bath before sinking into your plush bed or heading downstairs. The superior rooms are also light and bright and have a boutique finish where you can relax and unwind.
If cosy hideaways are more your thing then the standard rooms are the ones for you. Hidden at the back of the inn and overlooking the courtyard garden, they are charmingly small but perfectly formed. For groups, there are also a small number of spacious family rooms which can sleep up to three or four.
The area surrounding the inn is known for its rural pastoral beauty and is the perfect base for exploring Cumbria’s stunning Lake District. Lake Ullswater is just a short drive away and is a spectacular place for invigorating country walks, mountain hikes and bike rides. The owner’s sister property of Askham Hall is also just up the road and has a stately history which is well worth a visit. With 12 acres of beautiful grounds, it here that the organic produce for the bar and restaurant can be found.
