Frampton Court gives you the opportunity to stay in a beautiful Georgian mansion house that is nearly 300 years old. The estate to which it belongs is located on the banks of the River Severn on the edge of the Cotswolds and has been home to the Clifford family for over 1,000 years. It has a rich history to explore with links all the way back to William the Conqueror. This stunning property, built in the grand Palladian style favoured at the time, is set in its own private ornamental gardens and overlooks the estate’s 50 acres of lakes and the Grade I listed park. With room for up to 14 guests, this is a country retreat for special gatherings of family and friends.
Step inside and you’ll find that the interior is just as grand as the exterior. While warm and welcoming, the furnishings have been chosen to reflect the character of this beautiful building. For example, step into the hall and you’ll be greeted by gorgeous examples of carpentry, as well as some comfy sofas to sink into as the wood-burner crackles merrily away and you listen to someone playing a tune on the grand piano.
Move through to the formal dining room where you can all tuck into a sumptuous dinner while surrounded by the elegant portraits and landscapes on the walls. After dinner, you might want to retire to the drawing room as the ladies in Georgian times would have done and carry on the evening in front of the fire.
For a more relaxed atmosphere, you might want to gather in the kitchen for breakfast or a light lunch. This space contrasts with the dark wood panelling of the formal rooms and is bright, airy and equipped for any culinary challenge. In the evening, head to the cinema room, designed to create a bit of a theatre experience with the gold pelmet and velvet curtains framing the 58” screen. The kids might want to take themselves off to the games room, where they’ll find a pool table, plenty of board games and a dressing up box.
There are seven bedrooms in total, each beautifully furnished and given a name that reflects its personality or style. The Tapestry Room, for example, has an exquisite 18th-century tapestry hanging on the wall next to the four-poster bed. The Flora room is decorated with Frampton Flora watercolours painted by the ladies of the Clifford family and has lovely views over the park. The spacious Clifford Room, named after the family, commands fantastic views over the park and out to the lake, the perfect place to survey the estate with a morning coffee.
Frampton Court is located in the picturesque Cotswolds village of Frampton-on-Severn. Stroll into the village and you’ll find the 22-acre village green surrounded by beautiful Georgian and Tudor houses and some cosy pubs to stop off at for lunch. Go for a walk along the river or the canal or embark on a longer hike to Cambridge through the countryside. If you want to venture a bit further, hop in the car or even on a bike and take your pick of any of the Cotwolds’ other pretty towns and villages, all of which have their own unique charm.
