The Crewe & Harpur is a beautiful old village pub with a rich history that is now available as a private self-catered accommodation. With lovely boutique bedrooms and cottages sleeping up to 34 people it would be a fabulous choice for those needing large scale retreat that keeps everyone together.
Despite now being self-catering accommodation this fantastic building still feels like a proper pub with a cosy bar where everyone can gather for big meals and pints on draft. There's much charm to be found in the original features, such as the exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings, but the place is nice and luxurious thanks to the addition of warm Farrow & Ball tones and plenty of soft furnishings.
The first thing you'll want to do is find your room and relieve yourself of any luggage. The venue is made up for four main areas, the pub itself and three traditional stone-built cottages in the private courtyard where you'll find 17 beautiful boutique style rooms all decorated to a high standard, of which 14 have ensuite bathrooms. There are three bedrooms on the ground floor, perfect for older members of the group or those with mobility issues and most of the rooms can be configured as twins or doubles to suit everyone's needs.
Once that's taken care of make your way to the original bar. The hosts can provide a keg of local ale so you can pull a pint, or choose a bottle of wine and take a seat at one of the oak tables. The tables can be moved around and set as long dining tables for communal meals in a lovely cosy setting where you'll never have to queue for the bar.
The fully-equipped kitchen has two range cookers, all the cookware you could need and a utility room with extra storage, sinks, worktops and dishwashers. If, however, you fancy a night off from the cooking, the hosts have a comprehensive list of outside caterers you can employ for a night.
As well as the cosy pub there are plenty of other communal spaces to relax in and the huge lounge is particularly impressive with massive comfy sofas, armchairs, bunkettes and occasional tables making it sociable and comfortable without being at all cramped.
No pub would be complete without a dartboard and you'll find one faithfully provided in the bar as well as an additional games room with junior table tennis and table football to keep kids, and big kids, entertained.
In sunny weather you'll really enjoy the three outside areas. The courtyard is set up with picnic benches and large oil drum BBQ's for burgers and beers in the fresh air. There's a paved patio to the rear with lovely views over the valley. A nice place to gather for a sun downer. And lastly, a small lawned garden where you can sneak off with a good book if you need some quiet time.
When it's time to venture out you'll have plenty to keep you entertained. The pub is in the middle of the old market square which has a great fish and chip shop, a village shop and the local pub. Being in the Staffordshire Moorlands between the River Dove and the River Manifold positions you perfectly to explore this beautiful national park. Check out the nearby caves, do some rock climbing and visit the stepping stones at Dove Dale. If you want to eat out as a large group then The Royal Oak at Hurdlow offers a good menu and The Bull I Thorn offers authentic Italian pizza's.
