Head into the rural heart of the South West to The Old Piggery at Kerswell Farm, located just two-and-a-half miles from the stunning North Devon coastline. This listed 17th Century farm is no longer in operation but has instead become a peaceful haven that focuses on conservation.
The Old Piggery was built in 1889 but has now been renovated to become an environmentally friendly and beautiful getaway for couples or small groups of friends. After coming up the private driveway guests can enjoy the living area with its comfy sofas, wood burner, TV and DVD collection. The well-equipped kitchen has a small selection of essentials to get started with some cooking, as well as a Nespresso coffee machine. You're also greeted with a lovely welcome of a farmhouse cream tea, wine, snacks, milk, eggs, butter, tea, coffee and homemade bread.
There are 2 sumptuous bedrooms for grown-ups (sorry no children at Kerswell Farm) - 1 double with king-size bed and one twin room - as well as a bathroom with a large walk-in shower. There is also WiFi throughout for those of you who want to check your emails. For those wanting to dine alfresco in the summer sunshine, there's comfy garden furniture and a barbecue out in the garden, meaning there are opportunities to relax whatever the weather. The lakes also offer utter peace to unwind.
The owners live nearby but will respect the privacy of guests, and are on hand for help, advice and to do any essential washing of clothes at the farmhouse.
Guests are free to roam around the 20 acres of the farm and explore the grasslands, meadows, woodland and the four lakes, complete with wonderful wildlife and rare species of flowers.
For those who want to venture a little further there is so much on offer within a 20-mile radius. Head to the coast and visit the fishing hamlet of Bucks Mills with its cottages and rocky beach, the red cliffs of Peppercombe, or the sandy beach, cafes and restaurants at Instow. The 180-mile Tarka cycling trail is close by, and there are 4 bikes available for use at The Old Piggery – please provide your own safety equipment. Whether seeing the wildlife at Northam Burrows and Tamar Lakes or trekking across Exmoor, there is so much to do.

Leave a reviewSuch a lovely, peaceful place to be! The Old Piggery is a fabulous home-from-home, extremely comfortable, totally relaxing, immaculately clean and well equipped. There's plenty of parking and turning space plus fantastic grounds surrounding the farm that are a pleasure to explore. All of this topped off with Elaine's hospitality and attention to detail that just makes being here that much more amazing. The delicious home made fresh produce waiting for us; bread, eggs, milk, jam, butter, cream and scones, the red wine (probably not home made?!), fresh flowers, the 'Kerswell' stamped soaps and the personal 'Welcome' card, so very thoughtful and just add that something special to the stay. The cherry on top ..... two charming sheep in the orchard, who love a bit of attention, and a visit from Ralph, the loveliest dog you could hope to meet. Very glad we found The Old Piggery!

4 adults on a weeks stay. The Old Piggery is a gem. On arrival we were greeted by our host and noted that the accommodation was spacious and spotlessly clean. The conversion to accommodation is to the highest standard imaginable and the fixtures and fittings are second to none. Everything needed for a comfortable stay is provided and is of high quality and plentiful. The kitchen area is well designed with plenty of storage space. A boiler operates as required to supply hot water and an efficient central heating system The lounge is part of the open plan and is comfortable and cozy. There is a wood burner which we did not find the need use The Internet and TV function perfectly. The two bedrooms are well fitted out, warm and comfortable with ample storage. The bathroom is spacious, functional and has an efficient large walk in shower. Outside is a garden area with a table and chairs and is fenced to prevent dogs escaping. Through the gate and car parking area is the start of some beautiful walks on well kept grassy paths leading around some lakes with assorted Lillies. Initially these paths start at the bottom of a grass bank, not too steep, and meander past the lakes to a large open area surrounded by woodland. There are well trodden paths through the woods as well. There are also plenty of picturesque places within short driving distance. Clovelly and Hartland Point to name just two. Our hosts were helpful, and friendly throughout our stay and we all agreed that this is a spot we would genuinely recommend to anyone who likes walking or exploring from a comfortable base. It just works.

Our family of 4 plus our dog stayed at The Old Piggery for a week. The accommodation is so comfortable and thoughtfully done, they have made some really creative little touches too. The surrounding grounds are stunning for an explore, my husband enjoyed reading his book in the peace and quiet on a bench by the big lily pond. A beautiful and extremely yummy homemade loaf of bread and cream tea on arrival… along with milk and a lovely bottle of wine. We would highly recommend this cool stay, and you will sleep like logs!

I cannot praise Elaine and Adrian enough for how they have managed and put together all the little touches into making our stay just wonderful and idyllic. When you drive up and into Kerswell Farm.. The Old Piggery has its own gate and driveway leading to the converted barn itself. When you arrive.. Ralph the dog will greet you from the other side of the fence.. friendly and a lovely natured dog. On arrival.. you walk into the barn and have fresh flowers.. fresh home-made bread, milk, eggs, butter, wine, home-made dog biscuits, fresh scones with clotted-cream and jam.. it was a fantastic welcome. The Old Piggery is set within acres of green awarded conservation land and it made my morning walk with my dog the most tranquil time of day.. if you love wildlife and rare flowers and an idyllic and tranquil setting then this place has it all in your back garden. The Old Piggery inside is tastefully decorated and has a large double bedroom and a twin room so it was perfect for our stay. The bathroom is modern and has a large walk in shower. The kitchen/diner and lounge give a comfy, cosy ‘cottage feel’ with beautiful wild flowers and birds outside the kitchen window, I was lucky to see a pheasant, a squirrel, blue-tits, yellow-tits and robins all feeding just 2 metres from the kitchen window. The old barn has more than adequate space and everything you could need to be ‘home from home’ if you are cooking on a self catering basis.. certain condiments are already available and all the catering equipment you would need neatly stored. Elaine will also bake a cake if needed (small cost) but definitely worth it as I took it with me when visiting my parents on one of the days. In essence.. nothing is too much trouble or bother.. (wellies in all sizes can also be borrowed) if the fields are wet.. and Elaine and Adrian go out of their way to make your stay special (all you need to do is call/text them). Thank you Elaine, Adrian (and Ralph).

What a great find. Perfect get away cottage, set in a beautiful tranquil village, warm welcome on arrival with homemade scones jam and cream. The cottage is well equipped and dog friendly. Great location to explore Devon and Cornwall will definitely return.

Truly delightful. If you are looking for somewhere to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life - this is the place for you! Elaine and Adrian made us feel instantly welcome. The beds are gorgeously comfy (so much so we bought the same duvet) and the setting is simply stunning. The welcome dinner was most welcome after the journey down. Our canine friends loved running around the grounds and the dog shower is a very handy addition! The immediately surrounding dog proof garden also helped. We would thoroughly recommend.

A really beautiful and tranquil place to sty! Elaine and Adrian are great hosts and we recommend taking them up on one of their home cooked meals. They really have thought about everything you could possibly need and the Old Piggery is decorated and equipped beautifully. You will be "sharing" your accommodation with the resident bats who live in the eaves and can be heard coming and going in the late evening.

Cosy, beautifully styled (with amazing attention to detail) and such a delightful place to stay! Outside there are three carefully designed seating areas all benefiting from the sunshine, and perfect for whether you want to relax in a lounger with a book, have one of Elaine's delicious cream teas or dine on her most fantastic homemade food. You'll feel totally spoilt.
