The Broch is a truly unique property that sits in a secluded location on the spectacular Isle of Harris. The home takes inspiration from the stone dwellings that were scattered across Scotland’s coastline in the Iron Age, giving guests the opportunity to experience staying inside an ancient ruin (with all the modern comforts!). Surrounded by acres of unspoilt countryside, it is the perfect accommodation for couples or solo travellers looking to escape the hustle and bustle, switch off and relax.
Most likely the first broch built in the UK since the Roman era, The Broch pushes the boundaries of dry-stone wall construction. Huge stones make up the base of the property, before tapering upwards to a turf-crowned roof. Standing three stories high, it offers stunning views both out to the Atlantic Ocean and across the wooded Borve Valley towards distant ruins. To complete the Iron Age aesthetic, the home is entered across a slate drawbridge.
The stylish, minimalist design continues throughout the interior, where vast windows provide lots of natural light and delightful vistas. The ground floor of the home is where you’ll find the high-end kitchen – with all the appliances and cooking essentials you could need – and the dining area. This space is kept warm by a wood-burning stove, although an eco-friendly air-source heat pump also provides underfloor heating in the home.
A winding staircase, shaped from beach wood protruding from the walls and a gorgeous iron bannister with glass icons, leads up to the second floor and the main living space. This is a lovely spot to unwind with a good book or settle in for a movie night, with comfy seating, Sky TV and a second fireplace that offers a cosy ambience on chilly nights. The main bathroom is also housed on the middle floor and has a deep, freestanding bath and a separate wet room with a shower.
And finally, the bedroom is found on the top floor of The Broch, the best place to enjoy the commanding views of the breathtaking landscape. Here guests will be all but guaranteed long and uninterrupted sleep on the bespoke, super-king size four-poster bed. The bed is placed directly under a skylight, where you can gaze up at the starry night sky.
The Outer Hebrides is often described as one of Europe’s last great wildernesses. The Isle of Harris and neighbouring Isle of Lewis are renowned for their pristine beaches, rugged countryside and rich diversity of wildlife including eagles, peregrines, otters and red deer – making the location ideal for outdoor and nature enthusiasts. You’ll also be able to visit many quaint villages for a drink or bite to eat, take a tour around the famous Isle of Harris Gin distillery or journey to the Taransay, a magical, uninhabited island owned by the Borve Lodge Estate.
