Cosy cottage located on the beach at Dungeness with a unique interior designed around a Victorian railway carriage.
Located right on the beach on the Dungeness Estate on Kent's south coast, Sunray provides a unique escape to the seaside for families and groups of friends. From the outside, this pretty white cottage has the dramatic backdrop of the sea and Dungeness power station, whereas on the inside you’ll find a mix of contemporary and vintage design. At the centre of this is a salvaged Victorian railway carriage that seems to be moving through from the lounge to the master bedroom. After a busy day exploring the enormous shingle beach, climbing to the top of the lighthouse or strolling through Derek Jarman’s garden, put your feet up on the sofa in the train carriage or snuggle up in front of the wood burner and enjoy the sweeping sea views.
Step inside the single storey cottage via the entrance hall that leads through to the large open plan living space. This has been cleverly divided up into separate spaces for relaxing, cooking, dining and playing pool by the train carriage in the centre. To one end of the carriage, you’ll find the kitchen space which has the practical feel of a commercial kitchen, well equipped for trips with the whole family, as well as retro touches like the vintage dresser.
The dining space is behind the carriage facing the sea with big windows so you can enjoy the view and a wood burner to keep you cosy in the chillier months. On the other side of the carriage, you’ll find a relaxed seating area with a mini pool table and the main living area is located in the carriage itself. There are comfy sofas and armchairs gathered around a TV, perfect for cosy evenings in.
There are three bedrooms, comfortably sleeping six guests and an additional two children. The main bedroom has a double bed, ensuite bathroom and its own seating area next to a large window with uninterrupted views across the shingle beach and out to sea. There is a second double room and the final bedroom has a double bed and bunk beds suitable for two children. These rooms share a family bathroom with a walk-in shower and are all decorated to continue the fabulous railway theme.
Outside, you’ll find a large terrace with garden furniture that faces south over the beach and offers direct access down to the sea. The beach is a completely unique part of the UK’s coast with a slightly otherworldly feel to it. It’s one of the largest shingle beaches in the world and has been designated a Site of Special Scientific interest due to the vast array of wildlife that can be found around the headland. You can get stunning views of the area from the top of the lighthouse or you can explore by hopping on a steam train. Derek Jarman’s house is also located at Dungeness and you can explore the garden he created amongst the shingle.
