Every year in the snow-clad Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi an artistic masterpiece is created. Sculpted purely from frozen water and “snice”, the Ice Hotel is one of the most legendary art installations of modern times and is definitely one of the coolest stays you’ll find. Newly-designed every year, it is a magical place to enjoy a once in a lifetime adventure where -5 degrees is your balmy room temperature.
Ranging from simple and unique to masterfully creative, the rooms each have their own imaginative touches. Cosy reindeer skins adorn the ice beds in the Snow Rooms, while the Ice Rooms include their own artistic seating areas. If you want to cosy up beneath the spectacular aurora borealis then the ‘Northern Lights’ rooms are the one for you. With incredible light displays to recreate the phenomena, you can fall asleep alongside this dazzling natural wonder.
The Art and Deluxe Suites are also bound to wow and have a never-ending creativity which will amaze and astound. Beautifully handcrafted, each suite displays its own bespoke designs which can range from classical and mythical to fantastical and visionary.
As you’ll normally only spend one night on ice, the hotel also has a range of ‘warm’ rooms and chalet’s which are available throughout the year. The Kaamos hotel rooms offer double or twin accommodation with en-suite facilities, while the Arctic and Nordic Hotel Chalets sleep up to three to four people respectively. Coupled with the sauna rooms and toasty thermal clothes, these rooms are the best place to warm up.
Located just 200KM from the Arctic Circle and with nothing but beautiful thick forests and clear starry skies for company, the Ice Hotel is ideal for enjoying a unique wilderness adventure. Here you can take a magical husky ride through the thick snow covered floor before gazing up at the magnificent Northern Lights. Snowmobile and hotel tours are also on offer along with ice sculpting lessons and local cultural experiences. For summer visitors, white water rafting, stand up paddling and forest bike tours are also on hand to help you explore the untouched natural surroundings.
Once you’ve finished exploring and want somewhere to relax, the hotel has an excellent selection of restaurants and seating areas in which you can chill-out. The Ice Hotel restaurant is the place for a gourmet treat where reindeer fillets and moose carpaccio are some of the common delights. A traditional homestead restaurant is also available for some rustic homemade dishes, while the world-famous Ice Bar is the coolest place for a drink.
