Tucked away in the rolling Staffordshire countryside in the charming village of Ellastone, this beautifully converted barn is the perfect place to get away from it all with the family. The building has a rich history, once being part of the Calwich Estate which has played host to the likes of the composer Handel and the philosopher Rousseau. The village and surrounding area also became the setting for George Eliot’s ‘Adam Bede’ and if you head out for a stroll it’s easy to see such creative minds being inspired by the landscape. Set on the edge of the Peak District National Park, you’ll be able to enjoy long scenic walks and delicious pub lunches before snuggling up in The Old Barn’s beautiful living room in front of a roaring fire.
Step inside this lovely cottage and you’ll find the living space on the top floor, beneath a beautiful vaulted ceiling with exposed wooden beams. During the day, skylights fill the open-plan space with natural light, while in the evenings you can light the log burner to create a cosy atmosphere. If you’re not tempted by dinner at the Michelin-recommended pub next door, the Duncombe Arms, there’s a fully equipped kitchen to help you rustle up delicious meals.
Head back downstairs to find the three bedrooms, all complete with comfy beds and luxurious bedding. They’ve been furnished in neutral tones and with prints inspired by nature on the walls to create relaxing spaces that promise a great night’s sleep. There are two double rooms and a twin that can be converted to a double with a guest bed, offering a bit of flexibility for groups.
Make the most of the outdoors when the sun is shining and sip a cup of coffee out on the patio. There’s an alfresco dining area with a BBQ, where you can cook up some treats from one of the nearby farm shops and enjoy a lazy afternoon in the garden.
If you fancy getting out in the countryside, there are plenty of walks and cycle routes right from the doorstep, taking you through the picturesque Weaver Hills and the Peak District National Park. Spend a day at the races at Uttoxeter or enjoy a peaceful morning fishing on the River Dove. For a bit of culture, the magnificent Chatsworth House is just 40 minutes away in the car and the historic market town of Ashbourne is also nearby. The Old Barn also makes a great base for a trip to Alton Towers which is a 15-minute drive away.
