Valleyside Escapes - named best glamping site in the South West after winning gold in the Glamping Business category at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards - is a beautiful hidden gem with three luxurious safari tents near a riverside meadow in the historic village of Bickleigh-on-Exe in the heart of Devon. 'Oak', 'Maple', and 'Birch', sleep up to six in each tent, and being a very family-friendly site, would be a perfect fit for couples with kids, or two couples bringing a child each.
The tents have panoramic valley views and their own verandas from which to enjoy them. Inside is surprisingly spacious and very lush. The main living area is open plan with a cosy leather sofa where you can chill out or read a book, a well-equipped small kitchen with a gas hob and fridge and a six seater pine dining table where you can enjoy a hearty breakfast, play some games or catch up on your emails with a cuppa. The space is made extra cosy by a wood burning stove which you can fire up in the evenings to keep your toes toasty.
When it's time for bed you'll find two bedrooms, one a king and one a twin, and a king sized cabin bed perfect for a couple of kids or even two adults. The beds are made up with nature-inspired duvets and fluffy pillows and you'll find plenty of storage, shelves and bedside tables for all your bits and bobs.
After a good night's sleep you'll be glad of the private bathroom which contains a large shower, toilet and sink and has been stocked up with fluffy towels and luxury complimentary toiletries for you to enjoy.
On a sunny morning you can open up the tent completely and bring the outside in. Make that first coffee and head out on to the veranda to enjoy the view as you make your plans for the day.
If you're bringing children there's a lot to keep them happy and occupied. Stroll over to the kids play area and watch as they swing and slide, climb the tree trunks and tyres or whip up a soil cake in the bespoke Mud Kitchen! There's boules and skittles to play as a family and if you head over to the Honesty Shop you'll find an array games and puzzles to borrow.
There's a private riverside meadow where you can do some wild swimming and explore the nature trail. Afterwards, why not find a spot and settle down for a picnic in the sunshine? You'll also find a communal fire pit here which is enormous fun late in the day, so bring along some marshmallows to toast and enjoy a sun downer whilst the kids feed the ducks after an afternoon fishing.
On Friday night the Courtyard Bar is open and is a wonderful place to settle in with a local cider or ale with the smell of jasmine and honeysuckle all around. New for 2024 is a games room adjacent to the bar with pool table, dart board, table football and retro Nintendo.
Pick up one of the excellent paella kits on your way back and cook a feast on your own fire pit. This comes highly recommended and makes a nice change from standard BBQ dinners. And if you've forgotten anything you can pop into the Honesty Shop to stock up on the basics.
Just a few minutes' stroll from the site you'll find Bickleigh Mill and Bistro where you can enjoy a Devon cream tea, and just over the Bickleigh Bridge you can get a pint at the Fisherman's Cot Pub by the River Exe.
