Housed in an old factory building on the east side of the city, Berlin’s Michelberger Hotel is an outstanding example of loft-style living in one of the world’s coolest cities.
The imposing building has been transformed into an unashamedly hip 113-room boutique hotel with lounge, restaurant, bar and courtyard. Vast windows flood each cleverly designed room with light whilst colourful electrical cables snake across the walls in a nod to the building’s industrial heritage. Depending on how many of you are staying (rooms can accommodate 1 – 6 people) you’ll find a mix of comfy day beds doubling as sofas, and roomy elevated mezzanine beds complete with ladder and safety net. The design is white minimalist – this is Berlin after all – but you’ll have everything you need including toiletries, TV and free wifi. If you’re looking for something more romantic then why not book one of the specially designed luxury suites featuring huge beds, fireplaces and film projectors. Recently they have added "Hideouts". They come with sauna, bath, rain shower, kitchen, dining/work table and lots of space. There is a second bed area for guests travelling with children.
But the Michelberger is about more than it’s rooms. How many times can you say you’ve hung out at your hotel? You’ll want to at this one. Low walls of art and design magazines sit amid the comfy sofas and grand piano in the lounge, whilst the bar spills into the outside courtyard-come-music venue. The staff are friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable (not aloof like the hipster badge might imply) and will happily suggest somewhere brilliant to see/drink/dance/eat.
Speaking of which, the restaurant at the Michelberger is also excellent, serving locally sourced organic food including raw and vegan options daily. Once a month they have Barfood Friday. A evening where the bar and kitchen work together to create small dishes out of one local product while the bar matches it with complimentary craft spirits.
The Michelberger can offer more than just a place to stay. It has some amazing event spaces too, perfect for corporate events, meetings, screenings and even weddings.
The Michelberger is located in Friedrichshain in what was East Germany. The area, along with Kreuzberg down the road, is known for its music and arts scene with world-famous nightclubs including Watergate and Berghain (with it’s terrifying door policy) close by. You’ll also find the East Side Gallery aka the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall, and the Badeschiff – a floating swimming pool (summer only) within walking distance. If you want to venture further afield, the U- and S-Bahn stations are opposite the hotel meaning you can hop around town to visit the usual tourist sites with ease.
