Enjoy a stay like no other at the stunning Marques de Riscal, an avant-garde hotel designed by Frank Gehry in Elciego in La Rioja's Alava province of Spain.

Unveiled in 2006 this retreat mixes luxury with contemporary living while combining design, art, gastronomy, wine and a beautiful landscape for a truly unforgettable experience.

With views across the valley, each room is uniquely designed with many having the zig-zag windows that make this whole building quite the statement piece. The twin or double bedrooms are designed and furnished with real attention to detail, and are accompanied by black marble bathrooms equipped with a bath and shower.

As well as the accommodation there is a spa and two restaurants at Marques de Riscal. The Vinothérapie Spa offers a range of grape-based treatments. There is also an indoor pool, solarium, Finnish sauna, hot tub, fitness centre and massage services.

The Marques de Riscal Restaurant specialises in dishes from Northern Spain, while the 1860 Tradicion Restaurant offers more traditional Spanish cuisine using all local produce, but with more of a modern twist.

Right at the top of the hotel is rooftop library-lounge with wine bar which also offers panoramic views of the surrounding town and countryside. Outside there are eight different terraces and a garden to enjoy the sunshine, a drink, or to simply relax.

The region is famed for its wine and the tours of the Marques de Riscal vineyard can be arranged, as can a tour of the Vivanco Museum - Europe's largest wine museum.

There is also plenty of nearby landmarks that are definitely worth a visit. In the province of La Rioja there is plenty of culture and history to be experienced, with its museums, universities and the Co-Cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda.

Food and drink lovers should head to the famous Laurel Street and its vast array of bars and restaurants serving Spanish wine and tapas. For the more sporty Izki Golf, with its spectacular 18 holes and open fairways and designed by renowned Spanish golfer Severiano Ballesteros, is just 12 miles away.
