The detail

Hidden away in the peaceful Essex countryside, Paper Mill Island on the River Chelmer offers an idyllic setting for a relaxing rural escape. For several centuries it was the site of a water mill that was used for corn and to make paper. Now, it’s home to a charming waterside lodge where you can wake up to the gentle sounds of the river before setting off to explore the Chelmer Valley. Make the most of your private river access and have a go at paddle boarding, go for long walks along the towpath or simply sit back and relax on the deck and watch the canal boats drift by.

Step inside the lodge and you’ll find a spacious, open-plan living area with big glass patio doors that let in plenty of natural light. The inviting lounge area with its big comfy sofa is the perfect spot to put your feet up after a day enjoying the outdoors. There’s also a fully-equipped kitchen with everything you’ll need to rustle up delicious meals or to prepare a picnic for a day’s exploring. Enjoy your meals at the table indoors or take them out onto the deck and soak up the views of the river and the weir while you eat.

There’s a cosy double bedroom decorated in neutral tones and soft lighting, creating a relaxing space where you can unwind at the end of the day. There’s also a large ensuite shower room where you’ll find fluffy towels waiting for you and a walk-in shower. If you need an extra bit of sleeping space, the sofa in the lounge can be converted into a bed, suitable for another two guests.

You might just fancy sitting out on the deck and watching the world go by but if you want to head out and explore, you'll find no shortage of things to do in the area. The lodge is located about halfway along the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, a 14 mile journey that connects Chelmsford with the coast. If you want to navigate some of this yourself, you can book a boat trip with Essex Waterways, based at the nearby lock. This is also where you can hire canoes or kayaks and enjoy a gentle paddle along the river. For keen walkers, the towpath provides a lovely scenic route to follow or you can head off along one of the footpaths and explore Danbury Woods or Blakes Wood. If you want to venture a little further, go for a bike ride, stopping off at villages such as Little Baddow and Danbury along the way.
