This marvellous house is believed to have been built by Captain Upton in 1708 and in addition to being beautifully refurbished it boasts an excellent central location. It would the perfect holiday home for a couple with two children or friends seeking sea, sun and all that lovely Falmouth has to offer.
The house is spread over three levels with a welcoming kitchen to greet you on the ground floor. The room is light and spacious with oak floors and dark wooden units blending the traditional and the modern seamlessly. Square framed windows provide a view of the courtyard and there's a large wooden dining table where you can settle in for a hearty breakfast. You'll find everything you'll need including a full sized fridge-freezer and a dishwasher.
Once you've dispensed of the luggage, why not fix a drink and head out into the pretty courtyard? You'll find a table and chairs surrounded by lots of plants creating a delightful tropical setting within which to unwind and shake off the journey. On your first day you might like to take it easy and just relax out here, opening some wine and making your plans for the following day.
The ground floor also has a hidden toilet and a shower under the stairs, perfect for a post beach freshen up.
Once you've eaten you can make your way up to the first floor and settle for the evening in the living room, a spacious warm room with oak floors, dark beams, big Indian rugs, a cosy sofa and an armchair. The furnishings are in-keeping with the style of the house and have a slightly colonial vibe reminding you of its history. Make use of the chessboard or snuggle up with a movie before bed.
There are two bedrooms, both on the second floor where you'll also find a delightfully quirky feature – a small ladder which takes you up to a tiny lookout. This is a mesmerising little spot where you can sit in solitude and gaze at the ever changing views of Falmouth Harbour.
The main bedroom has a fabulous wrought iron king size bed bedecked in crisp white linens and fluffy pillows where you can sleep deeply with the sound of the sea for company. There's a ceiling window that will allow the light to gently suffuse the room in the morning, much nicer than an alarm clock. The second bedroom is equally cosy with twin single beds and exposed beams and both enjoy views of the courtyard.
Once you're ready to start your day you can make your way to the main bathroom which is sleek, modern and very stylish. A powerful shower will blast all the cobwebs away, after which you can wrap yourself in a towel warm from the rail and head down for breakfast.
It's time to head out and explore! And you couldn't be better placed to do so. The cottage is hidden down one of the many passageways and you're just a short wander from the pretty harbour. Here you'll find the Maritime Museum which is fun for children and adults alike and will give you a real flavour for the area. There are independent and boutique shops to explore, a few galleries and of course, the chance to buy a famous Cornish pasty, which you can enjoy hot as you stroll the streets.
During your stay be sure to check out the local beaches, maybe try some water sports which are offered at Gyllyngvase Beach. And if you want to venture further afield hop on a boat to St Mawes, of take the train to Truro.
