Magikvanilla is an award-winning surf camp located on the first World Surf Reserve in Europe. With world-class surf instructors, stylish rooms and exceptional service, it’s no wonder that this place has a seriously good reputation. The villa is a converted traditional Portuguese house, so has bags of character along with exceptional sun-decks and terraces - perfect for chilling out on after a day in the surf.
Magikvanilla has five shared rooms (sleeping from two up to five people). There’s also a bungalow (The Duke) that sleeps two, with its own private bathroom and lounge. Light and airy rooms are tastefully presented with simple, beach inspired interiors - think blues and aquas paired with beautiful wood clad walls and cool tiled floors. Tropical prints on the bedding and carefully-selected plants complete this effortlessly laid back look. One glance at these rooms and you’ll be feeling as positive as the affirmative mantras stylishly emblazoned on the walls.
There’s a shared TV lounge with large comfortable sofas where you can relax in the evenings. The kitchen and dining area is simply done but hits big again on style with a large black and white photo montage wall.
There are numerous sun-decks and terraces to chill out on - and for the more competitive there’s also a pool table and table-football. There are also plenty of opportunities to socialise with your fellow surfers with a weekly BBQ and a sprinkling of outdoor cinema screenings. If you fancy some peace, there are plenty of quieter areas to reflect in too.
The surf school itself offers a range of courses from complete beginners to the more seasoned surfer. There’s also options to add-on yoga, aerial yoga or SUP lessons. The instructors are all experienced and are are credited by the International Surf Association (L2) and the Portuguese Surf Federation - so, you know you’re in safe hands.
Chic interiors aside, it’s the location that makes this surf school so bone-achingly cool. Based on the first World Surf Reserve in Europe you know that you’ve headed somewhere truly magical. 8km of sandy beaches make this a mecca for surfers - with a variety of beaches and breaks to choose from (and all are within easy walking distance).
The town of Ericeira is a quaint fishing village that happily welcomes the surf crowd. It’s a bustling, vibrant place with plenty of charm to go round. Enjoy a pasteis de nata (that’s a Portuguese custard tart to you and me) at one of the excellent cafes. With an abundance of fresh seafood restaurants and an array of festivals and markets throughout the year, it’s a great place to experience the best Portugal has to offer. In the evening there are plenty of restaurants serving food late into the night and bars buzzing until the early hours.
