On the banks of the Douro River, between the mountains of Marão and Montemuro sits Casas de Pousadouro. The grounds are large with pretty terraced gardens; a delightful riverfront dock for easy access to the water; and a nice big swimming pool for cooling off in the mid-afternoon sunshine. The historic looking buildings have been restored with such precise attention to detail that they offer cutting edge comfort, whilst remaining at one with their rustic aesthetic.
Casas de Pousadouro is comprised of four houses, with spectacular views of the river, and one separate bedroom with its own en suite bathroom. Inside, the houses have all the flamboyant touches to make your stay as enjoyable as possible, from the large floor to ceiling windows that enhance you connection with nature, to the comfy furniture, exposed stone walls and lovely artwork hanging throughout.
Three of the houses have fully equipped kitchenettes, allowing you to cook up some lovely locally sourced food. And breakfast is served daily for all guests at Casas de Pousadouro. Additional meals are also available on request, meaning you can just sit back and relax, letting the friendly and attentive staff take care of everything. This is a secret hideout, a quaint village of charming holiday homes, all of which have unrivalled access to some of Portugal’s most dramatic and astounding scenery.
With such instant access to the water, you may wish to spend lots of your time kayaking or swimming in your gorgeous natural surroundings. Boat trips along the river can be arranged and allow you to explore the area as the sun begins to set, whilst sipping on a lovely local Port. With such incredible surroundings, you have a vast array of hikes, rambles and walks to go on, so be sure to venture out and see what the area has to offer. The Douro Valley, which stretches from the nearby historic city of Porto right to the Spanish border, must be explored and is home to picturesque mountains and river scenery as well as one of the oldest wine growing regions in the world.

Leave a reviewJulianna and her staff at the Casas are fabulous. Friendly, accommodating, generous and the property is pristine. Breakfast was delicious and we looked forward to it each day of our seven night stay. We stayed in Pilots House which is a house of windows with each window offering a breathtaking view. Beds were so comfortable and the linens were soft. We so enjoyed our stay. Wine tasting near by but otherwise we just enjoyed the property. A must if traveling to Portugal. Cathi and Peg
